Australian star Naomi Watts has emerged as the favourite for the lead female role in Peter Jackson's epic remake of King Kong.

The Mulholland Drive beauty has been approached to play ANN DARROW, an American actress who makes a living performing in Broadway song and dance shows in Depression-era New York.

The part was originally portrayed by Fay Wray in the original 1933 classic and subsequently by OSCAR-winning actress Jessica Lange in the 1976 remake.

According to sources, UNIVERSAL has offered the role to Watts, although a deal has yet to be secured.

Lord Of The Rings film-maker Jackson is poised to pen the script this November (03), with shooting scheduled to begin next summer (04).
