Legendary American photographer RICHARD AVEDON has died. He was 81.

The New York-born fashion and portrait photographer passed away earlier today (01OCT04) at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, following a brain haemorrhage during a photo shoot for THE NEW YORKER magazine last Saturday (25SEP04).

Avedon was famous for photographing the rich and powerful in black and white, including Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Charlie Chaplin, Andy Warhol and Marilyn Monroe.

During his long career, Avedon worked for glossy magazines VOGUE and HARPER'S BAZAAR, and served as The New Yorker magazine's first staff photographer.
