Hard Rock Hallelujah
Deep Purple in fancy dress, GWAR-lite? Who cares really, because Lordi won that most hallowed of prizes, the Eurovision Song Contest. For those of you awakening from your cultural deep-sleep, to answer the 'what' Lordi are a band of horror-shock, latex-outfitted loons from Finland, peddling a hard rock sound rather less shocking than their image. The answer to 'why?' I'm afraid needs a dissertation, not a review. We may well be on the cusp of a new age of mediocre music given new life through the medium of dressing-up. Actually we've probably been there since about 1965.
As a final note, it's worth mentioning that if you listen carefully you can actually sing Alice Cooper's "Poison" at certain parts of the chorus. It's enough to send a shiver up Abba's collective spine.
'Smalls Change (Meditations Upon Ageing)' arrives in April.
The two awards have made for a great 72nd birthday present for the country music icon.
