Vampire romance Twilight is leading the field for the 2009 MTV Movie awards, with seven nominations.

The film - based on Stephenie Meyer's bestselling book - is up for the best movie award while leading man Robert Pattinson is named in the breakthrough male performance category.

Pattinson's co-star Taylor Lautner is also named in the breakthrough male category with Kristen Stewart up against the likes of Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway and Kate Winslet for the best female performance prize.

Twilight is also nominated in the best fight and best song categories.

Its main competition for the golden popcorn trophies comes from High School Musical 3: Senior Year, with five nominations, and Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire, which has four nominations, including best kiss.

Other films with multiple nominations include The Dark Knight, Iron Man and Wanted.

Unlike other movie award ceremonies, the nominees and winners for the MTV Movie prizes are selected by the viewing public with fans able to vote on the MTV website until May 27th for all categories except best movie, for which voting is open until May 31st.

Saturday Night Live star Andy Samberg will host the ceremony at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles on May 31st, with categories such as best 'wtf' moment alongside the traditional acting awards.
