To Hell with Love Movie Review

If To Hell with Love sounds familiar, it's probably because you've seen it (or something like it) before.

An independent black comedy (hopefully the film's title clued you in to that), we are exposed to the story of Alan (David Coburn), a guy so down on his luck that in real life he'd commit suicide. In the space of 48 hours, Alan gets fired, robbed, attacked, and dumped by his girlfriend. He's even writing a novel on the side, and his hard drive crashes. Suddenly, Alan's life gets even worse when family arrives in the form of his loser brother and cousin. They've got problems of their own,

Will things turn out for the best? That will depend on whether you hang on through the entirety of To Hell with Love, as you can be forgiven if your interest wanes by the midpoint of the film. Writer/director Karl Kozak does capable work with an obviously low budget and inexperienced actors, but his script lacks a maturity needed to make black comedy work. I've seen the "guy loses everything" story umpteen times in my career, and it rarely works out very well. Audiences just have little interest in watching losers flounder around for 90 minutes, only to miraculously find their footing at the very end. It belies the realities of life and never plays well for either drama or comedy. My hunch is that this, Kozak's first movie, is a necessary evil he had to get out of his system (hell, I wrote a similar script about 10 years ago and it ended up as terrible). But Kozak's Out of the Black, made just two years later, is a far more assured and mature production.

There are a few interesting and vaguely amusing moments in To Hell with Love, but ultimately the clever title is actually the best part of the movie.

Just doin' some grating.
