The Blob Movie Review

Cast & Crew

Screenwriter : Kay Linaker, Theodore Simonson

Starring : Steve McQueen, Aneta Corsaut, Earl Rowe, Olin Howland, Alden 'Stephen' Chase

I know The Blob is considered a classic on the strength of Steve McQueen's leading role in it, but really, this isn't scary, and it's barely even camp. The film is most memorable to me, in fact, for its ridiculous Burt Bacharach-written opening song, a cheery number that recalls Frankie and Annette more than horror ("It creeps / And leaps / And glides / And slides / ... Be careful of the blo-oooooooooooob"). Though that's in keeping with the film itself: McQueen spends most of the film worrying about living in a small town rather than trying to deal with the title creature. Considered interesting at its time -- the special effects are period appropriate but this was an independent film -- it's still a big stinking piece of cheese today. Curious cheese, though.
