Miles Kane , The Last Shadow Puppets - Alex Turner and Miles Kane perform on stage as The Last Shadow Puppets at the Hackney Empire in London at Hackney, Hackney Empire - London, United Kingdom - Friday 1st April 2016
Miles Kane - A host of stars were photographed as they attended the UK premiere of 'Mortdecai' which stars American actor Johnny Depp. The premiere was held at the Empire cinema in Leicester Square, London - Monday 19th January 2015
A week in music videos... Manic Street Preachers teamed up with Richard Hawley for the nostalgic title track from their upcoming new album 'Rewind The Film'. It has that classic Preachers mix of anthemic melodies and melancholic undertones that have kept them high in the UK album charts since their debut in 1992. Looking at their latest track, this new offering is going to be just as impossible to categorise musically as usual - but we like it that way! Watch the video for 'Rewind The Film' here.
If a perfect summer 2013 song exists, it's Dan Croll's 'In/Out'. It doesn't feature on his debut EP 'From Nowhere' which we're hoping means there's going to be some talk of a debut album soon. We defy you not to move to this calypso inspired dance track, the video for which features karaoke style lyrics - if you don't find this infectiously upbeat tune catchy enough. Watch the video for In/Out here.
He fronted The Rascals and paired with Alex Turner to create The Last Shadow Puppets but, with his debut solo record 'Colour of the Trap', Miles Kane has stepped out from the shadows. However, they do say that the difficult second album is an indicator of whether an artist is truly any good, and now Kane returns with 'Don't Forget Who You Are' to show us what he's really made of.
Kicking off with a punch is 'Taking Over', a track which demonstrates that Kane is evidently happy sticking with his 60s-style psychedelic pop-rock sound. A snarling guitar hurtles us into a steadfast opening verse before transforming into a livelier, foot-tapping chorus, and this dynamic makes for an engaging three minutes. We slink easily into the title track with retro style riffs and lyrical 'la la la's' that transport you straight back to Carnaby Street. Meanwhile, the snarling lyrics of 'Better Than That' complement the pacing, stomping beats of the drum and guitar and provide a contrast to the smooth contemplating of 'Fire In My Heart'.
There are points where lazy rhyming taints the talent that Kane clearly possesses. Lyrics such as "it's a tough one/it's a rough one" in the otherwise fantastic 'Tonight' and "not enraged/locked in the cage/without breaking out/I'm gonna scream and shout" in 'You're Gonna Get It' simply sound contrived. However, 'Out of Control' and 'Fire in my Heart' are comprised of heartfelt and mindful lyrics that prove Kane can really write when he puts his mind to it.

Plus, Bullet For My Valentine have a new video and Muse imitate Queen's party antics, in our weekly round-up...
A Week In Albums... Vampire Weekend have been getting some much deserved props for their comeback LP, Modern Vampires Of The City and our man Jim Pusey was more than happy to join in the chorus of praise. Marking the group's second US Billboard number one charting album to-date - not to mention their best selling first week effort - Modern Vampires... looks like it's only going to set the indie rockers onto greater things. Pusey commented: "While it's an album that may struggle to repeat the phenomenal commercial success of Vampire Weekend's debut, I'd argue in the long run there's more to love on Modern Vampires. It's not just because the band's affection for New York seeps through every pore of the record, but also because sonically it's a far more interesting album. If this is indeed the end to a trilogy of records, Vampire Weekend have set themselves an extremely high bar to reach for the next chapter of their career."
Collaborator-happy party bringers Major Lazer have returned with a new album in the form of Free The Universe. A record that does little to change the act's sound, it doesn't necessarily need to, says Andy Peterson, with the array of people brought on board, including - there he is again - Ezra from Vampire Weekend, Peaches and Wyclef Jean, meant to enhance the party not the sound evolution. Peterson writes, "At times it's fair criticism that the formula isn't saying anything new, but the main objective here is far less about innovation but instead about being what it is; a no-nonsense party record made to be turned up to eleven and put on after twelve. Righteous."
To say Miles Kane has done well for himself is surely an understatement, with friends in the highest of places and a talent for songwriting that led Mojo to call him 'one of the most gifted composers of his generation.' His album Colour of the Trap has the critics' praise echoing around him, and it seems that he can only expect more to come as he pursues his ambitions in the coming year.

He's been a Little Flame, had a stint as a Last Shadow Puppet, and he's even had a stint as a Rascal, but now Miles Kane has become...well Miles Kane. Scratching around looking for the right harness to his undoubted song writing quality has been a complicated journey for one so young, but it's ultimately been worth it. Having unfairly been overlooked when it came to the back slapping that followed in the wake of the brilliant Last Shadow Puppets, Miles Kane is back with a few friends in the form of The Colour of My Trap.

This new single by Miles Kane, who was formerly a member of The Rascals and the non-famous half of The Last Shadow Puppets, openly embraces one of contemporary British indie's trademark features, the wordless call-and-response sing-along. "Ar ar arawwaaah!" he yells enthusiastically. "Woo ooh-hoo hoo woo!" respond the backing vocals. This is bound to go down well in a room full of drunken, sweaty gig-goers. Meanwhile, Kane's sharp guitar solo, at once clever and understated, provides a slightly more subtle pleasure, and distracts from some of the less successful ideas on show.
