Mike Tyson has revealed he was in a daze while shooting his iconic comedy scenes in The Hangover because he was still battling substance abuse issues at the time.
Reflecting on the making of the movie, which helped turn Tyson's fortunes around, the former boxer tells The Hollywood Reporter he wasn't "coherent" about the project or his role in it.
He says, "Somebody had told me something about a movie, but I wasn't coherent as to what he was talking about. They made it sound like it was low-budget, not a serious movie."
Director Todd Phillips adds, "At that time, Mike was sort of struggling. He's the first to admit he was still struggling with drugs while we were filming that movie, although I didn't know at that time."
And Tyson was more than a little confused when he bumped into an excited Justin Bartha and Zach Galifianakis at a Las Vegas party and they told him they were thrilled to be working with him.
He recalls, "They said, 'We're going to be shooting a movie with you in two weeks...' I said, 'Really?' and I started drinking with them. I was a little wasted at the time."
