Michelle Williams decided to become independent as a teenager after seeing other Hollywood stars file for emancipation from their parents.
The aspiring actress was eager to pursue a career in the spotlight and decided to legally distance herself from her disapproving mother and father, separating from them when she just 15 years old.
She left school in California shortly afterwards and landed her breakout role in teen TV show Dawson's Creek, and Williams now admits it was the influence of celebrity headlines which prompted her decision to become independent.
She tells Britain's The Times, "What teenager doesn't want total autonomy if they have the chance? I got the idea from reading about it in the papers.
"At the time there were a lot of kids in Hollywood and in the news doing the same thing."
MACaulay Culkin and Drew Barrymore are among the child stars who filed for emancipation from their parents as youngsters.
