UNDERWORLD star Michael Sheen is battling it out with Kenneth Branagh for Best Theatre Actor at this year's (04) LAURENCE OLIVIER AWARDS.

The ex-partner of Kate Beckinsale and the HARRY POTTER star starred in CALIGULA at London's DONMAR WAREHOUSE and EDMOND at the NATIONAL THEATRE respectively last year (03), to great critical acclaim.

GOSFORD PARK star Helen Mirren and fellow Brit Kristin Scott Thomas are up for Best Actress accolades at the February (04) ceremony, set to be hosted at the LONDON HILTON hotel.

JERRY SPRINGER - THE OPERA, based on the American TV presenter's infamous chat show, is up for eight nominations, including Best New Musical.
