Alice Through The Looking Glass Review

Excellent

This much more light-hearted sequel reinvigorates the franchise after Disney's quirky but murky 2010 reboot of Lewis Carroll's classic, which sent the heroine into Underland (not Wonderland) for a dark adventure that spiralled into a Lord of the Rings-scale battle. Thankfully this time the odyssey remains personal, centred on lively characters rather than overwrought plotting. And Alice's time-travelling quest is both pointed and engaging.

After captaining her late father's ship on a global journey, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returns to 1875 London to bad news: her mother (Lindsay Duncan) has made decisions that take her future out of her hands. As she struggles to respond, she is summoned back to Underland to help her friend Hatter (Johnny Depp), who is emotionally devastated by the fact that his entire family has been killed. So Alice decides to help by confronting Time (Sacha Baron Cohen) and stealing a device that will allow her to travel back to help the younger Hatter. But she also becomes entangled in the early life of the White and Red Queens (Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway), and the feud that grew between them as young sisters. Meanwhile, Time is terrified that Alice is unravelling the fabric of reality.

The emotional nature of Alice's mission adds a surprising layer of suspense to the entire film, while director James Bobin (The Muppets) adds a breezy comical tone to Tim Burton's stunningly visual designs. Some of the more wacky flourishes don't quite work (such as the "sea of time" imagery or Time's hand-powered vehicle), but the film more than makes up for these with wonderful character details. This lets the actors relax into their roles while cranking up the surreal touches. Wasikowska is great as the plucky heroine fighting for her right to control her own life, a strong point that's made without preaching.

Sarah Silverman 'Excited' By Drake's Crush

Sarah Silverman Michael Sheen Seth Meyers Drake

The One Dance star hosted Saturday Night Live last weekend (21-22May16) and he admitted his crush on Sarah, a former SNL star, by sharing a picture of her headshot, which hangs in the hallway backstage at the show, on Instagram and writing, "I do" with a ring emoji. He also wrote "WCE", which stands for Woman Crush Everyday.

The 45-year-old was thrilled to learn Drake, 29, found her appealing, but jokes that it could be down to their shared Jewish background.

"I looked at my phone and I had 16 texts from all my young comedian friends that call me mum and it was very cool, they were very excited," she told U.S. host Seth Meyers on Thursday night (26May16).

The stars dated from 1995 to 2003 and share 17-year-old daughter, Lily Mo Sheen, and now, after a handful of failed romances, Michael has hooked up with comedienne and actress Sarah, who has grown close to Lily.

And the teen's mum couldn't be happier with her ex's new flame.

Kate Beckinsale Recreates Daughter's Birth Photo

Kate Beckinsale Michael Sheen Sarah Silverman

The British actress, her former partner Michael Sheen and their daughter Lily Sheen, re-enacted the moment Kate cradled her newborn daughter for the first time for a hilarious Instagram post on Wednesday (18May16).

It shows the trio in the same positions they were in back in 1999 when Lily arrived, in which a glowing Kate is lying in bed with the infant lying across her chest, while a wild-haired Michael smiles proudly in the background. The 42-year-old Underworld star captioned the cute side-by-side snap: "Always a baby to me #Lily."

And it appears Kate wants to make a tradition out of recreating intimate family snaps, as during an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Tuesday night (17May16), the brunette beauty unveiled a photo of the family taken on Lily's 16th birthday, in which they recreated the moment Lily was born. The photo shows Kate reclined on a kitchen table with Lily sitting between her legs, while a flustered-looking Michael stands to the side.

Kate Beckinsale And Michael Sheen Recreate Daughter's Birth Shot

Kate Beckinsale Michael Sheen

Just adorable. Kate Beckinsale has enlisted her ex-partner and close friend Michael Sheen to recreate the 1999 birth photo of their daughter Lily Mo - despite said child now being 16 to 17-years-old. Sometimes even the biggest of stars can get a bit silly where their children are concerned.

Kate BeckinsaleKate Beckinsale hasn't changed much since 1999

The photo sees Lily cuddling up to her mother with her eyes closed in a perfect mirroring of her birth shot. Beckinsale posted the photo alongside the original on Twitter and Instagram today (May 18th 2016), captioning it: 'Always a baby to me #Lily'. However, she did allude to it being a joke by adding: 'See more tonight on 'The Late Late Show'' (a comedy show hosted by British presenter James Corden).

Michael Sheen's Dad Attended Batman Premiere In Jack Nicholson's Place

Michael Sheen Jack Nicholson

The Welsh actor has previously discussed his dad Meyrick's side-gig as a Nicholson doppelganger, admitting their likeness is truly uncanny.

"He's been incredibly busy over the years," Michael explained to the Los Angeles Times in 2010. "He started when the first Tim Burton Batman film came out... Since then he's worked all over the world... He's done bar mitzvahs, he's done weddings, commercials in Europe, everything."

Now Michael's ex-girlfriend, Kate Beckinsale, has revealed Meyrick even got the chance to walk the red carpet at a real Nicholson movie premiere back in 1989, because the real Jack wasn't feeling up to it.

Kate Beckinsale 'Loves' Michael Sheen's Girlfriend Sarah Silverman

Kate Beckinsale Michael Sheen Sarah Silverman

The Underworld actress dated the Welsh actor for eight years until 2003, and the former couple, who have a 17-year-old daughter Lily, have maintained a close friendship throughout the years since. Kate proved she gets along well with Sarah, Michael's girlfriend since 2014, when the comedienne attended the premiere of Kate's new movie Love & Friendship with Michael, 47, on Tuesday (03May16).

Photographs taken from the Los Angeles event show Kate jokingly clutching Sarah's face while other images show the trio laughing and joking around for the cameras and posing for pictures together.

"I love her. I love her. I love her," Kate told E! Online. "I am so glad Michael found her so I don't have to spend the rest of my life looking for her!"

Michael Sheen Cut From Finding Dory

Michael Sheen

The Masters of Sex actor revealed he had a part in the sequel to 2003 Pixar animation Finding Nemo in January (16), but he has since learned he will no longer be in the final cut when the movie is released in U.S. in June (16).

"I got a phone call saying I'm not in that (Finding Dory) anymore, they cut me out," he tells Magic Radio at London's Into Film awards. "Unbelievable. I was very sad, I was such a fan of Finding Nemo, but that's the way it goes, especially with animated films, you never know what's going to make it to the final cut... It's always a good thing to remember - you can always end up on the cutting room floor."

The sequel follows the forgetful blue tang fish Dory, voiced Ellen DeGeneres, on a mission to find her long-lost parents. It also features voice work from franchise newcomers Idris Elba, Diane Keaton, and Modern Family's Ty Burrell.

Since Nemo and his father were reunited, the residents living in the coral off the great barrier reef have been the best of friends but Dory keeps on finding herself questioning her past. Now, everyone's favourite forgetful fish is about to set out on a mission to find her own parents.

As Nemo and Marlin are both all too aware of Dory's lack of oceanly experience, they feel that accompanying her on her mission is the only way to make sure she's safe. The two little clown fish and the blue tang soon find themselves in water that they're unfamiliar with.

Dory's search takes her to new locations outside of the ocean too, whilst at the Monterey Marine Life Institute the forgetful fish meets up with some friends - new and old.
