Heavy metal rockers Metallica have enlisted Rick Rubin to produce their next album.

Rubin, who has worked with the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and Red Hot Chili Peppers, is also producing the new disc from multi-platinum rockers Linkin Park.

Metallica confirm on their website that Rubin "has been coming by the studio every now and again to listen to some of our new stuff and throw his two, three cents in.

"We have been jamming, writing, just plain messing around and having fun in the studio for the last few weeks."

There is no official release date for the follow-up album to 2003's ST ANGER.

Metallica recently announced they would be playing shows in South Africa next month (MAR06), as well as making appearances at several summer (06) festivals in Europe.
