The rocker started popping pills to numb the pain in his shoulders following an onstage accident in 2006, which left him requiring several rounds of surgery and years of physical therapy to regain the use of his hands.
Earlier this year (13) he admitted to fans that he had become hooked on his painkillers, and now he reveals it was his partner Nicole Leigh Smith, who he married last October (12), who helped him through the low times.
He tells the Sydney Daily Telegraph, "The depression that comes from not knowing if you'll ever be yourself again is f**ked up. The unknown, after knowing the top of the mountain, is scary.
"I was hospitalised many times, my heartbeat would get so low, the buzzer would go off, and the nurses would come running. But my wife was beside me always. To be with somebody when the chips are down, and you're at the ugliest and weakest, that gives you some hope, brother."
