Metallica

Metallica are heading to North America for the next leg of their WorldWired Tour, marking their first major US comeback in eight years. They'll be setting out in Spring, and the name of the tour suggests that won't be the last we see of them by any means.

Metallica sure have some talented young fans out there. They recently put out a request to all their social media followers to send them their own cover versions of songs from their tenth studio album 'Hardwired... to Self-Destruct', and one of their responses was just mind-blowing.

This Is What Metallica's 'Enter Sandman' Sounds Like On Classroom Instruments

Metallica Jimmy Fallon

Metallica's 'Enter Sandman' is super fun to try and play on any instrument, but nothing compares to watching James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich try and re-create it with The Roots on only classroom instruments. Alas, what would entertainment be without 'Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon'?

MetallicaWho knew 'Enter Sandman' could be so child-friendly?

In the latest instalment of Jimmy Fallon's Classroom Instruments series, members of Metallica took up some rather unusual instruments that they probably haven't seen since elementary school and played their landmark 1991 hit 'Enter Sandman' accompanied by The Roots (who, by now, have got quite adept at using mini-guitars, tiny keyboards, glockenspiels and maracas).

Metallica Are Finally Set To Return With A New Album 'Hardwired... To Self-Destruct'

Metallica

Metallica announced yesterday (August 18th 2016) that they will be releasing their long-awaited new album 'Hardwired... To Self-Destruct' this Fall, and have now unveiled the very first track from the new collection. It's been eight years since their last project, and it also marks their first release through their very own label Blackened Recordings.

Metallica - Hardwired... To Self DestructMetallica - Hardwired... To Self-Destruct

This is the 11th studio album from Metallica and follows up 2008's 'Death Magnetic'; an album which reached number one across the board, going multi-Platinum and selling close to 3 million copies. The album will include not one but two discs, and nearly 80 minutes worth of metal. Plus, the deluxe edition will include a third disc full of 'the riffs that were the origins of the album' as well as a bonus track called 'Lords Of Summer'.

'Hardwired... represents the next phase of our journey as Metallica and we are so excited to share it with you', the band wrote in the official announcement on their website. 'Keep watching this space for more information, we cannot wait to hit the road to play these songs live and get in your faces once again, so strap yourselves in. INCOMING!'

Check out 'Hardwired' here:

The first track from the record, 'Hardwired' premiered on the radio via Minneapolis' 93X yesterday; a roaring anthem filled with thunderous percussion and those classically infectious riffs. It will be available as an automatic download for everyone who pre-orders the new album through the website.

'Hardwired... To Self-Destruct' has been produced by Greg Fidelman - who worked on 'Death Magnetic' - alongside frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich. While 'Death Magnetic' is their last band project, they did release a collaborative effort with Lou Reed in 2011 entitled 'Lulu', on which Fidelman also worked as an engineer and mixer.

'Hardwired... To Self-Destruct' is set to be released through Blackened Recordings on November 18th 2016.

Metallica Red Hot Chili Peppers Flea

Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea was stopped at customs and forced to sign Metallica merchandise after a mix-up at an airport in Belarus over the weekend. Despite the fact that he tried to insist he wasn't in Metallica, he still had to go along with the customs officials' mistake.

FleaFlea looks nothing like Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo

Flea posted a shot of himself signing his name on some Metallica CDs, DVDs and posters on Instagram after he and the rest of Red Hot Chili Peppers failed to convince staff at a Belarus airport that they weren't the heavy metal band they were accused of being. Luckily, Flea didn't mind too much given that he's a Metallica superfan himself, but that must've been a weird day for the rockers nonetheless.

Glastonbury Founder Michael Eavis Defends Festival Headliners Metallica

Michael Eavis Metallica

Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis has defended the decision to have Metallica headline the festival this year. There has been growing opposition regarding Metallica performing at the festival by festival-goers who don’t feel a heavy metal band is an appropriate headliner and animal activists who disagree with band member James Hetfield’s association with bear-hunting.

Michael Eavis Metallica Dairy farmer and festival founder Michael Eavis has defended the decision to have Metallica headline the festival

Eavis has not been put off by either of these factors and has maintained he is “looking forward to seeing them.” He continued: “We have been going for so long that people don’t expect us to put on a heavy metal band. We had Rage Against The Machine and we have had lots of fairly heavy metal bands in the past but this is not a typical headline. We usually have bands like Radiohead, Coldplay and U2, the Rolling Stones, but I am really looking forward to them.”

Metallica Will Be "Fantastic" At Glastonbury, Says Kasabian's Tom Meighan

Tom Meighan Kasabian Metallica

Meighan is fully for Metallica headlining the festival and he explained why: “They’re going to be different but who do you f***ing want on stage, The Beach Boys?” He added: “I love Metallica. Everyone’s complaining but [Metallica] can take it anywhere…They’ve been around the block. People will be surprised…They’re a heavy metal band so everyone’s going to panic, but Metallica are great. They’ll be good. They’ll be fantastic, trust me.”

Should Metallica Be Removed From Glastonbury Headline Slot?

Metallica Glastonbury Festival

Over 14,000 people have signed an online petition to have Metallica removed from this year’s Glastonbury line up. But why? Is the idea of ‘Enter Sandman’ ringing out across the festival fields really just too much for some to handle? Well maybe, but the actual reason why a petition has been launched to ban the rock giants is to do with one of frontman James Hetfield’s more questionable hobbies.

MetallicaMetallica are set to headline Glastonbury this year

When he’s not fronting Metallica, singer James Hetfield hunts bears, he’s also a member of America’s National Rifle Association and is set to narrate an eight-part TV series called 'The Hunt', documenting the killing of Kodiak brown bears in Alaska. Unsurprisingly, animal rights activists are outraged at the singer’s after work activities and have called for the band to be pulled from the festival.

Metallica Team Up With Classical Pianist Lang Lang For Anniversary Performance Of 'One'

Metallica Lang Lang

Since their first appearance at the Grammys exactly 25 years ago, Metallica have often experimented with classical instruments. Back then, they played One, but lost the Hard Rock/Metal Performance award to flute-mongers Jethro Tull. Last night they returned with that same song, collaborating with classical pianist Lang Lang on a haunting new rendition.

Metallica
It's been 25 years since the band's first Grammys.

After an introduction by Jared Leto, the performance opened with Lang Lang playing a series of harsh and dramatic harmonies, which blended seamlessly into guitarist Kirk Hammet’s recognizable riff. At that point the audience erupted in a cheer. Frontman James Hetfield played the song's iconic intro and Lang Lang played some expressive runs. Then, as the frontman sang about feeling disabled in war, Lang Lang’s piano melody added another layer of depth to the song.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has announced plans for a new age-rating system designed to tackle online music videos deemed inappropriate material for young people. The organisation's assistant director, David Austin, said the BBFC was responding to pressure from parents who were concerned about the sexual imagery freely available to children who had access to the web, according to The Guardian.

Austin said that a pilot project was being developed in association with Google and the UK music industry body, BPI, to test how the new classification guidelines might work with voluntary submissions to review, including content from Beyoncé, Metallica and Robbie Williams.

Spotify Proves Financial Worth To Artists, And Give QandA About New Features

Metallica Mumford And Sons Sean Parker

Every single publishing industry, from music, to academic journals, to books have fretted enormously over the impact that digital publishing and online streaming may have on their revenues. Spotify has been part of revolutionising the legal streaming of music, and has come under great fire from a variety of musicians for being a catalyst in the breakdown of how lucrative the music industry is.

However, as Rolling Stone report, using Mumford & Sons second album Babel as a case in point, Spotify have shown that their impact is not a negative one: Babel sold 600,000 albums in one week, and also broke Spotify records for most streams in a week.

Metallica is one band that has criticized similar streaming platford, notoriously suing Napster in 2000. Lars Ulrich, from Metallica, was at the Q&A that Spotify held this week, as was the ex- Napster owner Sean Parker (who was famously played by Justin Timberlake in The Social Network), and the two managed to kiss and make-up. "This was never about money," Mr. Ulrich said, quoted by The NY Times. "It was just about control." Now that they have control the Enter Sandman band have chosen to allow their music on Spotify.

Five years later, she joined the all-girl punk group Doll Squad. In 1990, she was the first choice of drummer for Nirvana, after Chad Channing left the band. After Dave Grohl's audition, however, she became the second choice but after that, Kurt and Patty became close friends.

Metallica, Beyond Magnetic Album Review

Metallica's new EP Beyond Magnetic is a somewhat belated follow up to their last studio record Death Magnetic. Released initially as a download (without a hint of irony), it's finally getting a physical release some 3 and a half years after the sessions that spawned these 4 songs. The vaults were opened to celebrate the band's 30th anniversary shows, however you can't help but feel it's also very convenient timing. Their much-maligned collaboration with Lou Reed last autumn was certainly viewed with some contempt by the core Metallica audience. In fairness Lulu did feature some musical moments that were as interesting as anything Hetfield and co have recorded in the last decade, but Beyond Magnetic is no doubt a musical palette cleanser ahead of a new studio album this year.

The Big 4 Live From Sofia, Bulgaria (with Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, And Anthrax) Review

Excellent
We deal in irony here in Britain as our default mode, so it should be no surprise to anybody that we've turned our backs to Heavy Metal, a format which has undeniably been our most successful musical export. Created almost by accident, there's little argument that it initially owed its structure to the imported blues, but by the time Black Sabbath emerged from working class Birmingham at the end of the sixties, the brutalised low end, booze, drugs and devil worshipping choreography of modern metal was all our own work.

Since then it's spread around the globe like a virus, a movement which has spawned a dozen sub-cultures, each of them in turn creating their own folklore.

And it's still wildly successful: world's best selling group? Forget Take That.

David Gray Warns Of Music Use In Guantanamo Torture

David Gray Eminem Massive Attack Metallica Rage Against The Machine

David Gray has called for greater examination of the playing of loud music - including his own song Babylon - during torture at Guantanamo Bay.

Suspected terrorist detainees are repeatedly subjected to loud music during interrogation at Guantanamo and other US bases with a wide variety of songs used, from heavy metal acts such as Metallica and Rage Against The Machine, to hip-hop stars such as Eminem and Dr Dre to novelty tracks such as the theme song for Barney the dinosaur.

But speaking on BBC Radio 4's World Tonight programme, Gray called for greater public discussion of the matter.

"Only the novelty aspect of this story gets it noticed... Guantanamo greatest hits," he said.

"What we're talking about here is people in a darkened room, physically inhibited by handcuffs, bags over their heads and music blaring at them."

"That is nothing but torture."

He continued: "It doesn't matter what the music is - it could be Tchaikovsky's finest or it could be Barney the Dinosaur.

"It really doesn't matter, it's going to drive you completely nuts.

"No-one wants to even think about it or discuss the fact that we've gone above and beyond all legal process and we're torturing people," he added.

The charity Reprieve, which was associated with the recent Meltdown festival curated by Massive Attack, has created a petition to encourage artists to ban their music being used in the situations discussed by Gray.

METALLICA - 20 Minute Interview

Metallica
METALLICA 20 Minute Interview We have a 20 minute interview with the entire band.
Featuring an in-depth chat about:

* The new album
* What took them back into the studio
* The Napster case & much, much more

On Wednesday 30th April, Metallica shot the video for the title track of their forthcoming album "St. Anger" at the Big House - San Quentin Prison in San Francisco, USA. The band entered the prison at 7 a.m.- when they took their first steps into the prison grounds, they knew this would not be just another video shoot.

The first thing the band were told by their designated correctional officer was "San Quentin has a 'no hostage policy' - which means if someone gets taken hostage, there will be no negotiating, you are on your own, buddy".

The video was shot with the band performing at various locations
