David Bowie Reckons Lou Reed's Metallica Collaboration 'Lulu' Was His "Masterpiece"

David Bowie Lou Reed Metallica Patti Smith

Never one to back away from a controversial opinion, David Bowie has pretty much a unique opinion on Lou Reed’s career. Believe it or not, he reckons that the late singer’s greatest musical work was his recent collaboration project with Metallica.

Lulu, released in 2011 with the metal legends, was one of the former Velvet Underground singer’s final projects before his death in 2013. It was almost universally panned by critics and listeners who were baffled by its complexity and lyrical themes. While not as challenging as Reed’s notorious 1975 album Metal Machine Music (seriously, don’t even bother with that one), it was instantly overlooked.

Sonisphere 2015 Cancelled

Prodigy Metallica Iron Maiden

Bad news for metal fans today: the UK edition of Sonisphere festival at Knebworth will not go ahead this year. Sonisphere’s organisers made the announcement on its official website late on Friday (January 16th).

One of the reasons given was that there had been a struggle to put together a “good enough” line-up, though The Prodigy, Metallica and Iron Maiden had all been announced as headliners for the July 4th-6th event. Furthermore, in the increasingly crowded festival fixture list, it’s been difficult to find a weekend that doesn’t clash with other events.

Metallica To Headline Reading And Leeds 2015

Metallica Leeds & Reading Festival

The first announcement has been made as to who will be playing the Reading and Leeds Festivals in 2015, and it’s a big one: Metallica have been confirmed as one of the three headliners!

Organisers announced on Tuesday (25 November) that the American legends of metal will appear at the festival for the first time since 2008, when they also topped the bill alongside Rage Against The Machine and The Killers. They also headlined in 2003 and 1997, so they’ve got plenty of experience of satisfying the festivals’ notoriously raucous crowds.

Miley, Metallica, 1D And Eminem Added To Guinness Book Of World Records

Miley Cyrus Metallica Eminem One Direction

What do Metallica, One Direction, Miley Cyrus and Eminem all have in common? Erm, not much, but they're all set to be immortalised in the new edition of The Guinness Book of World Records which comes out next week.

One Direction
One Direction: Big in America

As reported by Billboard, the long-standing almanac of impressive achievements is adding the musicians for various reasons, Metallica's being they are the first band to play a gig on all seven continents. They completed this feat this year in fact, when they treated some unusual guests to a show in Antarcita. James Hetfield spoke about the gig in a statement: "Seven continents in one year with Antarctica being the gig of a lifetime, yes, 120 scientists and competition winners. Not to mention the 300 very curious penguins!"

Glastonbury Festival goers were warned to "prepare for rape" by a subtitle blunder during the weather report on BBC News at Ten. The weatherman told the audience to "prepare for rain" but the caption instead read, "prepare for rape".

And it looks like this year might be a wet one. Forecasters are predicting sunshine up until the gates open, then a deluge of rainfall is set to cascade over Worthy Farm as Arcade Fire, Kasabian and Metallica headline the Pyramid Stage. The Met Office are predicting heavy rain showers between 10am and 9pm on Friday - the first full day of music at the festival.

Mogwai Laugh Off "Sh*te" Metallica, Call Lars Ulrich "Terrible" Drummer

Metallica Mogwai Lars Ulrich

Of course, anyone who's remotely interested in music would choose to see Scottish post-punk heroes Mogwai over Metallica at the Glastonbury Festival 2014 and the Glaswegian band have been doing their best to pull the crowds away from the Pyramid Stage on Saturday. Metallica - the only metal band on the bill - were a surprise and controversial booking, though Mogwai's singer Stuart Braitwaite doesn't seen what all the fuss is about.

"I just can't wait until we go all quiet and you can hear 'Enter Sandman' in the background, because we're on at the same time. I don't really see the fuss. They're a pretty big rock band and it's a pretty big rock festival. It would be good if they could go back in time to 1989. Metallica at Glastonbury in 1989," he said.

Metallica To Cover 'Wonderwall' At Glastonbury, But What Are The Best Oasis Covers?

Metallica Jay Z Oasis Maroon 5 Jake Bugg Robbie Williams Keane Weezer

In a similar fashion to the announcement of Jay Z in 2008, metal titans Metallica’s headline slot at the iconic Glastonbury Festival has been met with a wave of criticism and derision from commentators who have deemed the Metallica’s headline position as both a lazy, predictable booking and one that is incompatible with Glastonbury’s demographic. However, whereas criticism towards Jay Z in the vein of what was unleashed by the Gallagher brothers was a scathing attack on hip hop as a genre, laced with a degree of barely concealed racism, Metallica’s backlash largely stems from elsewhere.

Firstly, this is a band that hasn’t produced an album of any merit for well over a decade and what’s more, considering they were announced long after tickets had sold out, how many of Glastonbury’s middle class bohemians will actually want to watch the band? Metallica have themselves responded to the criticism by announcing they may open their set with a cover of “Wonderwall”, copying Jay Z’s act of protest back in 2008. However, it does appear that Jay Z’s version carried a greater amount of symbolism, given that it was the Gallagher brothers who were the most vocal opponents of his appearance.

- Pukkelpop (August 14th - 16th): This Belgian weekend remains seriously cool having first began in 1985 and always playing host to some of the world's best alternative music with early performers including Ramones, The Jesus And Mary Chain and Iggy Pop. Nearly 30 years on, Pukkelpop maintains its excellence with 2014 seeing the likes of Clean Bandit, Gogol Bordello and Die Antwoord on the bill.

Metallica At Glastonbury: 10 Acts More Deserving Of The Headline Slot

Metallica

Metallica have been festival mainstays since their appearance in the original incarnations of Monsters of Rock festival in the 1980’s- a celebration of all things hairy and leather-clad that takes place on the same Derbyshire site as the annual Download Festival. For over a decade now, the San Franciscan quartet have bounced from one UK festival headline slot to another, and does a year pass without them headlining a festival in British shores.

The metal titans remain safe in the knowledge that if they Download or Sonisphere’s booking honchos don’t come beckoning, there are plenty of other festivals just as keen to have them. To Metallica, their inaugural Glastonbury appearance will be just another huge event they can tick off their to-do list. Granted, metal has often been criminally under-represented throughout Glastonbury’s history, but the genre already boasts several continually well attended bastions of its own.

It seems that a welcome wind of change has finally blown across the fields of the Pilton site in Somerset as the Californian rock quartet's imminent arrival is heralded by fans who have been lucky to have picked up a ticket before they all sold out in April. However, there have been concerns over whether the average Glastonbury festivalgoer will be familiar with or even receptive to James Hetfield and co.'s music.

Metallica And Lang Lang? 5 More Divergent Musical Collaborations

Metallica Lang Lang Grammy Awards

Metallica teamed up with the phenomenally talented Chinese pianist Lang Lang at the 56th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday (January 26, 2013). It was a strange collaboration on paper, though offered a brooding intensity to the band's classic song One. Check out Metallica and Lang Lang.

'Metallica Through The Never': Prepare For A 3D Rock Movie Like No Other

Metallica

Metallica's action music movie, Metallica Through The Never, is smashing into IMAX theaters today in the USA and is preparing to blast wannabe concert documentaries (cough-OneDirection-cough) out of the stadium with a mind-blowing mash-up of pure metal riffage, a lean action story, plenty of fire, and that kid from Chronicle, AKA Dane DeHaan.

Metallica Through The Never
Metallica Pose With Actor Dane DeHaan [Centre], Star Of The Movie.

DeHaan plays Trip, a Metallica roadie, who is sent out on a mission to retrieve something the band needs from a stranded vehicle. However, Trip's road to quest completion is littered with rioters, police fights, forests of hanging bodies and much doomier details. Meanwhile, Metallica kick into a greatest hits show and all is well and rockin' until their signature pyrotechnics, special effects and microphones begin to fail. The surreal plotline sees Trip freed from his nightmare of road accidents and death-dealing horsemen and back to his roadie ways.

Dane DeHaan Stars In Metallica 'Through The Never' Teaser [Trailer]

Dane DeHaan Metallica

You know you’re making it as an actor when you appear in a Metallica music video, right? That’s what the up and comer Dane DeHaan must be reckoning, after the star of the forthcoming Amazing Spider-Man 2 appeared in the metal legends trailer for their concert movie Metallica: Through The Never.

DeHaan’s roles have been small for the most but, crucially, have come in big films. He played a solider in Lincoln, played Cricket Pate in Lawless and appeared as Lucien Carl in the film Kill Your Darlings, which appeared at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and next year he’s going to make a huge leap as Harry Osborne in the Spidey franchise. Metallica are evidently keen to tap into this rising star and so he appears in the trailer for their forthcoming IMAX movie by dashing to make it on time for his first concert as Lars Ulrich and co. rock out on stage. Halting him is a massive scale riot that seems to be going on around him.

The trailer is for the IMAX video which will be appearing at screens on September 27th before gaining a general release on October 4th. As for DeHaan, you can expect to hear much, much more from him over the next year or so; he’s already been gaining some props for his role in The Place Beyond The Pines this year too.

Metallica Through The Never - Teaser Trailer

Trip is a young and inexperienced roadie who is charged with the important mission of finding a damaged delivery vehicle and retrieving a valuable item that was on its way to sold-out Metallica concert. However, distracted as he is by the apparent complication of the task ahead, Trip's tour bus is crashed into side-on by a speeding car. Miraculously, he manages to escape with barely more than a scratch though only to find himself amidst a brutal looking battle between a sea of riot police and an army of masked, weapon wielding anarchists. Vehicles have been set alight and a murderous horseman is on the loose in this dystopic street scene as Metallica blare out their loudest, most aggressive hits on stage.
