OSCAR-winning actress Meryl Streep is to be presented with the AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE's highest honour next year (04) - the lifetime achievement award.

THE HOURS star - who has won two Academy Awards for her roles in SOPHIE'S CHOICE and Kramer VS Kramer and been nominated for eleven more - was delighted to receive the accolade.

She told reporters, "I am honoured to be selected by the AFI for the work I love doing - the event is in June and that might give me enough time to compose a list of all the people I'm beholden to in my life and to whom I owe everything."

The presentation will take place at a glitzy ceremony next June (04) where the AFI will induct Streep into the company of previous recipients ALFRED HITCHCOCK, Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Nicholson and Robert De Niro.
