Meryl Streep has ''no empathy'' for her character in 'August: Osage County'.
The legendary actress - who earned a record 18th Oscar nomination yesterday (16.01.14) for her portrayal of cancer-stricken Violet Weston in the family drama - admits she didn't want to take on the role and only agreed at the behest of a close friend.
She told ITV's 'Lorraine': ''I didn't [want to do it]. Because do you really want to sign up to play someone with mouth cancer, who is having chemotherapy, is nauseous all the time, is a drug addict, on pain pills and is mean as a snake? [A woman] whose children hate her, whose husband hates her so much he has to kill himself. Oh yes, sign me up!
''The reason I did this movie is because I have a great friend and she said to me, 'Meryl, you had a great mother, you have to do this for all of us who didn't, who made it in spite of that.'
''I think people will be unanimous in not having empathy for her.''
Streep stars alongside Julia Roberts, who plays her daughter Barbara, in the film.
Both actresses are nominated for awards at this year's Oscars, with Roberts up for Best Supporting Actress.
