Oklahoma Officials Win Approval For Merle Haggard Statue

Kacey Musgraves Merle Haggard

Officials at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame (OMHOF) outlined plans to honour the singer five years ago, but they have only recently been granted permission to erect the bronze sculpture of Haggard sitting on a bench with his guitar case outside the Muskogee Civic Center, where the star recorded his first live album, Okie From Muskogee, in 1969.

Following Haggard's death on 6 April (16), OMHOF bosses have been in talks with the musician's estate executors, who have expressed an interest in expanding the monument, with a piece designed by the star himself. He had asked local Oklahoma artist Dan Jones to create the artwork prior to his death, with plans to put it on display at his ranch near Bakersfield, California, but now his family would love to add it to the Muskogee Civic Center tribute.

"They want to see that placed in Muskogee," said OMHOF executive director Jim Blair. "The bench will be great, but what a story to tell - to have a memorial standing next to it that was designed by Merle himself."
