It's been nearly 20 years since the original movie, which grossed more than $800 million worldwide. Will Smith will not return for the sequel, though Roland Emmerich will be back for direct.

The sequel is set for release on June 24, 2016 and will see Usher play a central character as the son of Smith's character. The A-listers role in the original movie turned him into a global star and Usher - or his agents - will be hoping for the same sort of effect.

Usher is a key player in Lebron James' series Survivor's Remorse as Cam Calloway, a basketball player who moves with his family to Atlanta after he signs a professional contract. Starz quickly renewed the series for a second season following its premiere in October 2014.

Usher's other credits also include When the Game Stands Tall and Cartoon Network's Level Up.

Independence Day 2 is likely to be Hemsworth's next project, given he's now completed work on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 and comedy drama The Dressmaker with Kate Winslet.

"Excited to officially announce that Jessie Usher will be joining the cast for the sequel of #IndependenceDay!" said Emmerich on Twitter, announcing the news.

"Excited to Officially announce @LiamHemsworth and #JeffGoldblum as the next two pieces of the #IndependenceDay sequel," he added, later.
