The Lodger Review

Bad
Marie Belloc Lowndes' 1913 novel, The Lodger, based on the grisly Jack the Ripper killings in turn-of-the-century London, has been grist for the movie pulp mill ever since its publication. Knockoff versions of the story trace the history of film, from Pabst's Pandora's Box and all the way to mad psycho James Spader in Jack's Back and Daffy Duck taking on the Shropshire Slasher in Deduce You Say. The most famous version of the novel itself was the first Hitchcock-style Hitchcock film, the 1927 silent The Lodger starring Ivor Novello, who later recreated his role in a 1932 sound remake. The most atmospheric version of the tale was John Brahm's 1944 Fox redux with the creepy Laird Cregar as the notorious murderer.

Now writer/director David Ondaatje has come along with a contemporary version of the story, updated to the mean streets of L.A. in 2009. And this new version of The Lodger also has atmosphere in spades.

Suture Review

Extraordinary
The sleeper of the early 1990s, Suture is one of those stylish thrillers that you never forget. Shot in black and white, it tells the relatively simple story of a pair of long-lost brothers, one of whom tries to kill the other in order to escape his past and steal the brother's identity. Everyone comments on how alike they look -- the conceit being that the two actors are as opposite in appearance as possible -- one is black and largish (Haysbert), one is white and thin. Stunning photography and a very clever script make Suture the best movie you've never seen. Highly recommended.

The Hangman's Curse Review

Good
According to The Hangman's Curse, there are select citizens secretly commissioned by the government to investigate strange mysteries, crimes, and unusual occurrences across America. Working undercover, these people are known as The Veritas Project (Veritas is Latin for truth).

The Hangman's Curse, which is based on a novel by Frank Peretti, opens as Abel Frye--a troubled student in small town Washington state--hangs himself in the dark corridors of Rogers High School. Apparently Abel's peers teased him to the point where he didn't want to live any longer.
