Mel Gibson's controversial The Passion Of The Christ has been released a month early (APR04) in Peru after an influx of pirate DVD copies.

The religious epic, which has made over $350 million (GBP194 million) in America alone, has now received a rushed cinematic release to combat the widespread piracy, which is a common problem in the South American country.

MARTIN MOSCOSO, head of copyright protection at Peru's consumer protection agency, INDECOPI, says, "We have a rogue culture - a wise-guy culture.

"People think only fools follow the rules."
