Mel Gibson made Passover extra special for nuns in Louisville, Kentucky, on Monday (05APR04) when he screened his movie The Passion Of The Christ for them and then handed over a hefty cheque.

The Sisters of The Poor, who run a shelter for the elderly, were staggered when Gibson made a surprise appearance, and agreed to dine with them and aged patrons.

SISTER GONZAGUE says, "I have to plead very ignorant. In our community, we don't go to the movies and we're not up on the actors.

"I said, 'How did you get into doing a production like this? Were you an actor or something like that?'"

The nuns have refused to announce how much Gibson handed over to them, but they admit it's enough to pay all their bills for a month.
