Rock veteran Meat Loaf is calling for teachers to be given the right to discipline children in the classroom in a desperate bid to improve education standards.
The Bat Out of Hell hitmaker has a keen interest in education issues as his mother was a teacher, and he is convinced the standards of schooling in the U.S and U.K. are rapidly falling.
During an appearance on British Tv show Loose Women on Tuesday (02Apr13), the singer joined in a debate on the issue and blamed political correctness and the lack of discipline in schools for the problem.
He says, "You know what, education began to fail us about 15 years ago, and that's why, when you said you think it's the parents' (fault) - well, education failed the parents (too). My mother was a schoolteacher. So I think that people have too much time on their hands and there's too much political correctness and I think that we need to get that (discipline) back.
"You're right - we need the teachers to be able to discipline the children. Not necessarily beat them upside the head with a hammer but discipline them in the right way. It's exactly the same in the States."
