A man who tried to extort $100,000 (GBP50,000) from a member of the British royal family over an alleged sex tape is to appear in court this week (begs29Oct07) to apply for bail. Socialite Ian Strachan, 40, was arrested along with Sean MCGuigan in September (07), after attempting to blackmail an extended family member of the monarchy to hand over the cash in exchange for not releasing the explicit video. Strachan and 30-year-old MCGuigan claimed the tape showed the unnamed individual engaging in oral sex and insinuated that the royal had supplied cocaine to an aide. The video footage is also said to contain a number of unsubstantiated allegations against other members of the royal family, including Queen Elizabeth II. The pair is reported to have made the first contact with the Royal Household on 2 August (07), and the men were caught on 11 September after an undercover operation by London's Scotland Yard authorities. The two men have been remanded in custody since their arrest last month, but a judge will decide at a hearing this week whether or not to approve Strachan's application for bail, ahead of his 20 December (07) court date at the capital's Old Bailey.
