Superstitious actor Matthew Lillard insists his dead school friend saved his life twice - once at his funeral and once during a dangerous drinking game.

The SCOOBY DOO star credits his late pal TREY with preventing his death after giving him the Heimlich manoeuvre to dislodge a coin from his throat.

And Lillard also believes Trey stopped his engine from turning over to prevent a road accident - after his own funeral.

The 34-year-old explains, "This kid called Trey I went to high school with died when I was about 15 and it's funny because I reckon he's saved my life twice.

"Once when I was playing this drinking game. I actually ended up swallowing a quarter and Trey had to give me the Heimlich manoeuvre.

"The other time at his funeral, I pulled up to the ceremony in this beat-up old truck with no traction on the wheels. I was leaving for the wake, but engine wouldn't start. So I phoned my old man to pick me up.

"The moment he showed the engine started. To this day I wonder if Trey stopped my engine from turning over to make sure nothing bad happened to me on the road."
