Since it was announced that Matt Smith was leaving his role as the Doctor making his last appearance in the ‘Doctor Who’ 2013 Christmas special, the net has flooded with rumours regarding the new star among the already rife talk about 50th anniversary surprises.
When the Doctor reached his future tomb at Trenzalore in the final episode of series seven, ‘The Name of the Doctor’, little did fans know that it would be an omen of what’s to come. Of course, us wannabe Gallifreyans are used to this by now and through our grief we are already gossiping about who could be the 12th Doctor. ‘Skyfall’ actor Rory Kinnear was recently rumoured to be favourited for the role but that was shot down on Sunday (June 9th 2013) when his friend Liz Buckley took to Twitter to insist on its inaccuracy. ‘Everything in the papers about Rory Kinnear being asked to be the new Doctor is 100% b******s, just so you know. He's a bit sick of it’, she told followers. And what about the reports that suggest the Timelord could in fact become a Time-lady? Comedienne Miranda Hart came out tops on a recent poll of who the female ‘Doctor Who’ fans would want to see replace Matt Smith. ‘Are you serious? That’s hilarious’, she told DoctorWhoTv in response to the news. ‘I’m just surprised constantly by my popularity, let alone the fact people want me to be Doctor Who.’
Whoever’s replaces him, there’s no doubt we’ll deeply miss bowtie-donning Matt as one of the quirkiest Doctors there’s ever been. ‘It’s been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the Tardis for a spell with ‘the ginger, the nose and the impossible one’’, he said in a statement. ‘But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls.’
