It’s that time of year again – time to get overly emotional or just slightly snooty over the newly released US extended trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas special. This one, however, is super special, if you’ll pardon the wording, since it also marks the departure of the 11th Doctor and, correspondingly, Matt Smith.

The last time this happened to us (“us” referring here to whovians as an emotional support system, which was sorely needed at the time) was in the 2010 Christmas episode. Let’s just say bulk quantities of tissues were used during that episode. With current showrunner Steven Moffat’s propensity for killing off his characters (even though he mostly resurrects them afterwards) whovians the world over should probably gear up for a tear-jerker.

According to the trailer, this year’s episode will be a family affair, with the Doctor visiting his companion Clara at her parents’ Christmas dinner. We’ll also get to see some new friends in the face of the Silence, the Weeping Angels (always a favorite monster) and, natch, some Daleks, ready to wreak havoc.

Provided they can climb up the steps this time. Ok, ok, we know they can levitate. It’s still a bit hard to take them seriously. As a disembodied voice declares “The siege of Trenzalore is now begun,” it’s clear that we’re in for a momentous episode (and some questionable CGI, but what would a Christmas special be without it?)

“Everything ends, Clara,” the Doctor proclaims in the extended trailer. “And sooner than you think.”

Wise words indeed. In case you haven’t guessed it, The Time of the Doctor premieres on Christmas day.
