The British actor is moving on to bigger and better things.
Matt Smith is joining the cast of the new Terminator trilogy, reports Deadline. The British actor, who made his name playing the 11th Doctor in BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who, has been confirmed to be starring alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke and Jai Courtney in the upcoming Terminator reboot, Terminator: Genesis.

Smith will play "a new character with a strong connection to John Connor" in an initially smaller role that will develop and expand as the trilogy progresses.

"We don't have a TARDIS, but we do have a Time Lord: we're pleased to welcome Matt Smith to the cast of #Terminator" confirmed Skydance Productions, welcoming the 31 year-old English star on to the cast of the thrilling new flick.

Matt will be joining Game Of Thrones' Emilia Clarke, who will be playing Sarah Connor, Zero Dark Thirty's Jason Clarke, cast as John Connor, Jai Courtney playing Kyle Reese, and Dayo Okeniyi. The latter Hunger Games star will be taking the role of Danny Dyson, son of the brainiac cyborg developer played by Joe Morton in Terminator: Judgment Day.

Of course, Terminator just wouldn't be Terminator without the machine himself and Arnie will indeed be reprising his signature cyborg.

Directed by Alan Taylor, the action film's release date has been set for July next year whilst dates for the subsequent movies have not yet been set. Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier are writing the screenplay whilst Skydance's David Ellison and Dana Goldberg are producing.
Terminator: Genesis will be released on the 1st July 2015.
