How The BBC Nearly Cancelled Doctor Who - Closest Shave In TV History?

David Tennant Matt Smith Peter Capaldi

As popular as Doctor Who is now, it’s impossible to imagine TV without it, but we were nearly forced to live that reality when, back in 2009 The BBC nearly chose to pull the plug on the legendary sci-fi drama.

Matt Smith as Doctor WhoThis was Matt Smith's face when he found out they nearly cancelled Doctor Who

The near miss came about when David Tennant exited the show. So effortlessly charismatic and popular was he, bosses were adamant that he couldn’t be replaced and set about bringing the show to its knees. "I think there were plans maybe to consider ending it," Steven Moffat admitted at the Hay Festival.

Ryan Gosling is an actor-turned director for the gloomy Lost River, the film that premiered at Cannes Film Festival yesterday. The Drive star takes the reigns of an A-list cast for his directorial debut, which was shot in Detroit but is set in the fictional wasteland of Lost River. Billy (Christina Hendricks) is a struggling single mother with two sons, the teenage Bones (Iain De Caestecker) and a toddler.

Critics Disagree On Not So Psychotic "American Psycho"

Matt Smith

Bret Easton Ellis’s American Psycho has been reinvented for the West End’s Almeida Theatre and critics are torn. Naturally, the main point of disagreement between theatre buffs is Matt Smith’s performance as axe murdering yuppie Patrick Bateman.

Matt Smith, Doctor Who 50th Celebration
Smith typically gets better reviews for his Doctor Who acting than his take on Patrick Bateman.

Few could imagine anyone other than Christian Bale in that role and yet, Smith pulled it off, at least according to The Guardian’s review. Michael Billington approves of the production’s “cool wit” and notes that in this stage version, “Goold's stylish production, Duncan Sheik's music and lyrics and Matt Smith's beautifully defined performance” come together to recreate a perfectly glossy façade, which hides the much darker reality. According to him, the musical’s constant switching between “insane violence and the debauched idyll” is what gives this show most of its power.

Following a baffling turn of events for the Doctor in the 50th anniversary episode of BBC's 'Doctor Who' entitled 'The Day Of The Doctor', producer Steven Moffat intends to drop another bombshell on Whovians this Christmas.

The long-running sci-fi show's Christmas Special has now been given a title: 'The Time of the Doctor'. Rather ambiguous as usual, but with recent developments being revealed by producers, its set our minds racing. 'The Day of the Doctor' saw the Matt Smith incarnation of the Doctor meet his predecessor David Tennant as well as John Hurt who became the 'forgotten' Doctor that neither incarnation ever spoke about. Together, however, they resolved the 21st Century Doctor's darkest regret and saved his planet Gallifrey from total destruction.

Doctor Who has landed itself in the Guinness World Record books after the show's fans tuned in to the special 50th anniversary edition of the show in their millions, with fans from almost 100 countries watching the Saturday (23 Nov.) night bonanza. The special, titled 'The Day of the Doctor,' aired on the BBC in the UK and averaged over 10 million viewers in its homeland, but that figure didn't reflect the huge amount of foreign viewers who tuned into the show too.

The highly-anticipated episode, which starred current Time Lord Matt Smith alongside two previous Doctors in David Tennant and John Hurt, was simultaneously aired in 94 countries around the world so that all fans could all follow the story 'live.' The viewing figures gathered by the BBC and the Guinness World Records do not take into account the millions who are estimated to have tuned in via online streaming, which are predicted to have made the final figures even more impressive.

As A New Timelord Looms, Old Dr Who Episodes Are Found In Nigeria

Matt Smith Peter Capaldi

Nine new episodes od Doctor Who – previously thought to be lost forever – have been recovered in Nigeria, prompting hope that other long lost episodes of the classic sci fi adventure might be found, too.

The BBC destroyed many of its original transmission Dr Who tapes between the 60s and 70s, but many were transferred across to film for distribution, usually to foreign broadcasters, and that’s how nine new episodes ended up in Nigeria.

"It's thrilling," said Mark Gatiss, an actor and writer for the 21st Century incarnation of Doctor Who. "Every single avenue seemed to have been exhausted, every now and then something turns up - but to have two virtually complete stories out of the blue is absolutely incredible." (BBC)

Missing 'Doctor Who' Episodes Found In Nigerian Archive

Doctor Who Matt Smith David Tennant Peter Capaldi

Nine missing Doctor Who episodes have been discovered in Nigeria. During the 1960s and 1970s the BBC destroyed, rather short-sightedly, many of the original transmission tapes of the cult sci-fi series. Fortunately, copies were often shipped out to foreign broadcasters and eleven of these episodes (9 missing ones) have been uncovered in the Nigerian city of Jos.

The episodes discovered originated from the reign of the second Doctor Peter Troughton, who appeared in the role from 1966-69. Troughton's assistant, played by Deborah Watling, has also expressed her joy in the discovery of the tapes as only one storyline from her time in the Tardis remains in the BBC archives.

He said he wouldn't reveal this as "the rule is that you are not allowed to say you turned that job down because it's disrespectful" to the actor who obtained the role.

Sneaky BBC Officials Conceal This Sunday's Doctor Who Announcement As Celebrity Mastermind Episode

Matt Smith Jenna-louise Coleman

Let’s say it together now: NEW DOCTOR! The iconic BBC series Doctor Who is gearing up to reveal its chosen replacement for current star Matt Smith, who will depart after this year’s Christmas special (tear). The announcement will be made in a half hour special on BBC1 this Sunday. However, you won’t see the programme in any printed or online TV Guide.

Matt Smith, Comic-Con
It's almost time to say goodbye to Smith...

It seems that the DW team is so keen on keeping the secret of the new Doctor’s identity, that they did not even want to write the actor’s name or give away any hints in the programmes, so instead of billing the programme under its actual name Doctor Who: The New Doctor, it was billed as an episode of Celebrity Mastermind. At the time of the article this was still the listing.

The BBC Are On The Hunt For A Matt Smith Successor.

It could be safe to say that producers aren't on the lookout for a female Doctor Who. Although no indication is given whether the regenerated doctor's gender is the same or not, Jenna Lee Coleman's Clara's lines aren't half as surprised as they would have been had producers planned for the Doc to reappear with boobs and the Doctor doesn't react to a more feminine sounding voice. Sorry Olivia Colman and Helen Mirren; it's probably not going to be you.

Ben Daniels Is New Favourite For 'Doctor Who' Job: Could He Be The One?

Ben Daniels is the latest name to become the favourite to inherit the role of Doctor Who in the long-running BBC series. Very soon there'll be very few British male actors who haven't been rumoured to be taking over the controls to the TARDIS as the Merlin actor now has the most favourable odds at 6/1. With previous odds of 16/1, Chiwetel Ejiofor (Salt, American Gangster) now closely follows Daniels at 7/1.

Could Ben Daniels Take Over From Matt Smith As The New Doctor?

However, chances are the new Who may not be a male actor at all; there have been calls for the new Doctor to be female, which would mark a first for the series which has run since 1963.

Who Will Play 'Poldark' In The BBC's Reboot Of The 70s Period Drama?

Eddie Redmayne Matt Smith Aaron Johnson Jonas Armstrong Colin Morgan Rob James Collier

'Poldark' is set to return to our screens in a brand new reboot almost four decades on from the first episode premiere of the original series.

The BBC costume drama was first aired in 1975, based on the series of books by Winston Graham. It follows the trials and tribulations of Army Officer Ross Poldark's love life as he returns to Cornwall to find that the love of his life, Elizabeth, is set to marry his cousin. Embittered and unable to move on from his stolen love, he marries a simple servant girl named Demelza as the rest of his once idyllic life crashed around him. Filming for the new series is set to begin later this year in Cornwall, though producers are still searching for the right candidate to play the coveted lead role. So far, suggestions as to who might land the part include 'Les Miserables' actor Eddie Redmayne, Matt Smith of 'Doctor Who', 'Kick-Ass' star Aaron Johnson, Jonas Armstrong from 'Robin Hood', 'Merlin''s Colin Morgan, Rob James Collier from 'Downton Abbey' and 'Warm Bodies' actor Nicholas Holt.

BBC1 controller Danny Cohen announced the reboot, which will be adapted by Debbie Horsfield, saying: 'It has been a joy and privilege to commission programmes for BBC One. I hope audiences enjoy the range and creative ambitions of these new dramas for the channel.'

How Will Doctor Who Writers Explain Matt Smith AND David Tennant On Screen Together?

Matt Smith David Tennant Billie Piper John Hurt

Filming for the 50th anniversary edition of Doctor Who is underway and the Daily Mail have published photos from the set. For the first time, both Matt Smith and David Tennant will appear on screen together, whilst speculation mounts as to how the show’s producers will explain away the presence of two Time Lords on screen together.

Both Smith and Tennant being on screen isn’t the only surprise for the 3D special though. John Hurt has been confirmed as one of the cast members, as have Gavin and Stacey actress Joanna Page and Billie Piper, a former Doctor Who star herself. David Tennant left the show back in 2010, when he handed over the Time Lord reins to Matt Smith but he’s admitted that he’s enjoying being back on the set of the popular BBC sci-fi series and is also happy to be working with his former co-star Billie Piper again. “It is strange being back in the same suit, but it also feels very familiar and comfortable,” said Tennant. “There’s nothing quite like Doctor Who. It has a wonderful excitement about it. I always had happy times there. It’s lovely to be around Billie again, even though I see her all the time anyway.”

Get your sonic screwdrivers and Converse ready and prepare to run, because the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who will be a big one, featuring none other than David Tennant and Billie Piper.

BBC themselves have announced that the tenth doctor and his most beloved companion Rose will be back in the 50th anniversary episode, due to air this November, but they will be under different direction from last time, since this time Steven Moffat is behind the wheel. Ten and Rose will cross paths with Matt Smith’s eleventh doctor in a plot, which Moffat is so far keeping under very tight wraps. In fact, all eleven of the Doctor’s incarnations are rumoured to make an appearance in the episode.

Matt Smith, who plays the current doctor, praised Moffat’s writing for the anniversary episode. Smith has said the show "manages to pay homage to everything - and look forward".

Going Back In Time! The 'Doctor Who' Characters We'd Love To Make 50th Anniversary Comebacks

Doctor Who Matt Smith David Tennant Christopher Eccleston Billie Piper Catherine Tate Elisabeth Sladen John Barrowman Tom Baker Sylvester McCoy

The upcoming 50th anniversary of legendary British sci-fi series 'Doctor Who' has sent a flurry of fervent excitement through fans everywhere who are now spending every waking hour wondering what producers could possibly have dreamt up for this milestone celebration. Rumours have been flying around everywhere suggesting jaw dropping twists and major reunions (some of which are frankly impossible) and it is true to say that everyone is hoping for it to be their favourite 'Doctor Who' story ever.

There are, at least, some definite confirmations about what we can expect for the upcoming anniversary show. On November 23rd 2013 (that's precisely 50 years on from the airing of the first ever episode 'An Unearthly Child') a special 3D show will be aired on BBC HD and in cinemas. It's a rather apt way of celebrating 50 years; by using our own technological advances on a show full of gadgetry. Lead writer Steven Moffat told the Guardian: 'Technology has finally caught up with 'Doctor Who' and your television is now bigger on the inside' - making a reference, of course, to the Doctor's TARDIS; a police box spaceship that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.

Is It Back On Again For Matt Smith And Daisy Lowe?

Matt Smith Daisy Lowe

It looks as though Doctor Who actor Matt Smith, 30 and his ex girlfriend Daisy Lowe, 23, may have rekindled their friendship.

The Sun have reported that the on again off again couple may well be on again, after they struggled to keep their hands off each other at this week’s Esquire & Tommy Hilfger London Collection party, where Lowe was DJing.

Apparently, Daisy’s PR people were keen to ensure that she and Matt weren’t photographed together and even “jumped into the shot to stop a pap snapping the cosy pair.” The couple made “a big deal” of arriving separately so that they wouldn’t be photographed together but were apparently “all over each other” once they got inside. Daisy was DJ-ing at the event at The Zetter Townhouse, which was also attended by Tinie Tempah, who arrived in a snazzy looking Mercedes, Matt Smith’s chum Benedict Cumberbatch and The Kills’ Jamie Hince. The recently married Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood was also there with his new wife Sally Humphreys.

Fight! Sherlock V Doctor Who At The National Television Awards

Benedict Cumberbatch Matt Smith Steven Moffat

Obviously, both Benedict Cumberbatch and Matt Smith will approach the duel with compassion; they are of course great friends, but it does beg the question: with Dr Who going up against Sherlock in the national film awards, which of those fictional characters would win in a real fight?

We're plumping Dr. Who. By the time Holmes has determined the amount of hairs on Who's right leg by the length of his ear, The Doctor will have figured out how to banish him to a distant planet. And before anyone can say tardis, he'll be off.

The pair are in the running for the best actor prize. Steven Moffat - writer and producer of both - said to The BBC: "Well this is very flattering, but also terrifying. I hope everyone votes with tremendous care and the result is an exact draw between both shows."

Err...what happened to Daisy Lowe at the Tommy Hilfiger and Esquire after-party held at The Zetter Townhouse in London on Monday (January 7, 2013)? Wearing a classic leather jacket, floral print top and biker boots, the model looked a little confused and appeared to be acting strangely. Perhaps she was just a little excited (or nervous) to run into her ex-boyfriend Matt Smith, who was also in attendance. Nevertheless, Daisy, 23, tried out her skills at entertaining the star-studded crowd on the decks before carrying on partying with her fellow celebrities.

The Doctor himself was looking pretty dapper in a long winter coat, paisley scarf, black trousers and heavy boots. His close friend Benedict Cumberbatch also attended the bash, as did Rolling Stones star Ronnie Wood and his new wife Sally Humphreys. The couple tied the knot two-weeks ago in a ceremony at London's Dorchester Hotel. Sally, 34, beamed with delight as she arrived on the arm of her 65-year-old husband wearing a cream dress and glittery heels. Elsewhere, the omnipresent Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw decided on a night on the tiles despite his early morning wake-up call, and was pictured with Kate Moss' rocker husband Jamie Hince. Grimshaw opted for a well-tailored suit, though looked in need of a serious haircut.
