British comic Matt Lucas has been awarded damages from bosses at a U.K. newspaper over an article published in the wake of his ex-husband's sudden death last year (09).
The Little Britain star was devastated when his former partner, Kevin MCGee, was found hanged at his Edinburgh, Scotland apartment in October (09). The couple tied the knot in a civil partnership in 2006 before parting ways in 2008.
Lucas later filed suit against the Daily Star after the newspaper published an article which included false claims suggesting he had been placed on suicide watch following the tragedy, and a later piece which speculated about the end of their marriage.
During a hearing at London's High Court on Tuesday (25May10), Lucas was awarded undisclosed damages and newspaper bosses have apologised and agreed to pay the star's legal costs.
A statement from Lucas reads, "My deep pain and sorrow have been made even greater by the intrusive and defamatory stories made about my private life in the Daily Star just hours after Kevin's death. I had no choice but to bring these proceedings to protect my private life and my right to grieve in peace. I am just relieved that this case has been resolved and I sincerely hope this sort of intrusive reporting will now end."
