Matt Damon was moved to tears listening to a refugee describe her attempt to flee Zimbabwe as he visited refugee centres in the African nation on Tuesday (03Mar09).
The actor said he was "shocked and saddened" after hearing the plight of the 18-year-old, who was raped while pregnant as she tried to cross into South Africa from her homeland.
Damon, currently in South Africa filming the Nelson Mandela biopic The Human Factor, made the visit to Zimbabwe as part of his work with Not On Our Watch, a human rights group he founded with his Ocean's Eleven co-stars Brad Pitt and George Clooney.
The charity aims to help people in countries such as Zimbabwe, where an estimated three million locals have fled in a bid to escape severe poverty.
And after hearing the refugees' stories, Damon is adamant action must be taken by global leaders.
He says, "I have spoken to so many people who went through so much to get to this point. It is testament to the situation in Zimbabwe."
