Matt Damon's sequel to 2002's The Bourne Identity has shot to the top of the American box office with a staggering $53.5 million (GBP29.7 million) first weekend take.

The thriller was expected to compete with Will Smith's I, ROBOT, which shot to the top of the box office charts last week (18JUL04), but made more than $30 million (GBP16.7 million) more than the sci-fi blockbuster.

Halle Berry's CATWOMAN made a disappointing debut to come in third behind I, Robot - it made $17.2 million (GBP9.6 million).
