A Tv series based on Martin Scorsese's hit film Shutter Island is reportedly in development by bosses at American network HBO.

Executives are planning to bring Scorsese on board to direct the pilot for Ashecliffe, which will centre on the drama inside the mental hospital from the 2010 movie.

Dennis Lehane, who wrote the book the film is based on, will pen the script for the planned series, which will be set before the events of Shutter Island, according to Deadline.com.

The film starred Leonardo DiCaprio as a federal law enforcement agent who thinks he is investigating the disappearance of a mental patient, but learns he has been institutionalised for killing his wife.
