Cherry Falls Review

OK
By now, the audience for slasher films is perfectly attuned to the rhythms of Scream and its spawn of imitators, each more formulaic than the next. Attractive teenagers flirt with one another, meander around campus chatting on their cell phones, then abruptly find themselves isolated in an abandoned library or, God forbid, alone in the house. That's when the masked killer attacks. Cue the shrieks.

Put Cherry Falls a notch above the competition for the audacity of its wry comic twist. Yes, there's a creepy, longhaired psychopath, either a convincing drag queen or a ferociously strong woman, deliberately seeking out virgins for slicing and dicing. Virgins. The resourceful students of Cherry Falls High School soon realize that they have a deliciously simple choice: sex or death. Which would you choose?

Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession Review

Very Good
Z Channel was one of the first pay cable stations ever. It's "magnificent obsession" was movies, as Z Channel became known for being the definitive place to go for those obsessed with film -- snobs, cineastes, and plain old cinema junkies.

And then its programming chief killed his wife and himself.

Still Breathing Review

Good
Lighthearted and almost David Lynch-ian romance about a cruel gold digger living in L.A. and a puppeteer living in San Antonio -- who dream about each other. Another fine attempt at breaking the mold of romantic comedy... but lacking, oddly, the comedy.

Twin Falls Idaho Review

Very Good
The scene from Twin Falls Idaho that you won't forget is the fight between twins Blake and Francis. It's the most disturbing tangle of limbs since Greg "The Hammer" Valentine's patented Figure Four leg-lock in the World Wrestling Federation. Don't be fooled by this tasteless intro, however - the film moves much slower and with infinitely greater grace than the entire history of entertainment wrestling.

This dark, yet gentle love story is about the relationship between Blake and Francis Falls (Mark and Michael Polish), seen through the eyes of Penny (newcomer Michelle Hicks) the hooker. Written, starring, and directed by, The Polish brothers, Twin Falls Idaho captures a wealth of sadness and truth. The plot centers on Blake's struggle to reconcile his affection for Penny with an unshakable dedication to ailing brother Francis. Out of that turmoil comes the film's most poignant scene, as Francis desperately attempts to physically keep his brother from the one thing he knows he will never have - a woman.
