Albert Nobbs Review

Good
Based on a true story, this introspective film seems to suggest that these events aren't perhaps as extraordinary as they appear. But the strong premise is weakened by writing and direction that never get a grip on the story.

In 1898, Albert (Close) works at an upscale Dublin hotel, and no one suspects that he's actually a woman. Quietly going about his work while saving to open a tobacco shop, Albert is unassuming and relentlessly polite. Then he's asked to share his room with visiting painter Hubert (McTeer), who learns his secret and reveals one of his own: he's a woman too. But Hubert has managed to have a normal married life. This inspires Albert to pursue the hotel maid Helen (Wasikowska), which is complicated by her lusty relationship with handyman Joe (Johnson).

Malice In Wonderland Review

OK
Packed with references to Lewis Carroll's classic, this modern-day London romp is extremely well-made and nicely played by the strong cast. On the other hand, the British crime genre is more than a little tired by now.

Alice is a young woman (Grace) running from a couple of thugs when she's hit by a cab driven by Whitey (Dyer). She can't remember who she is, so he takes her along to meet the gangster Gonzo (King). Then Whitey learns that her wealthy dad (Hagon) is offering a $10 million reward for her return. And as Alice travels around London following clues to her identity, she meets a variety of eccentric characters. Ultimately, Whitey and Alice converge on a nightclub run by the mob boss Harry (Parker).

Shuttle Review

Terrible
One has to wonder if it ever occurred to writer-director Edward Anderson while making his thriller Shuttle how truly vile and reprehensible his project was. The hook, I'll admit, is pretty nifty: Two attractive young women, taking a shuttle van home from the airport find themselves terrorized by their psycho-driver. It fits neatly into the slasher-movie mold and, as a fan of the genre, I was intrigued by what twists and turns Anderson might throw at us. But as the true premise of his story unfolds, and we realize the reason for Shuttle's 106 minutes of torture and commotion, the whole enterprise collapses into the pile of stinking turpitude it actually is.

The women in question, Mel (Peyton List) and Jules (Cameron Goodman) have just returned from a Caribbean holiday. It's dark, and they're getting drenched in a downpour. So, they take a van driver's (Tony Curran) offer to provide cheap rides home from the airport. There are only three other passengers -- Seth (James Snyder), a shaggy-haired horn dog, Matt (Dave Power), his sensible, chilled-out companion, and Andy (Cullen Douglas), a nervous milquetoast. No sooner have they set out that the driver, who's gruff and bullying without quite being menacing -- a common trap that sub-par thrillers often fall into - "gets lost" in a desolate stretch of the city, pulls out a gun, demands cash from his passengers, and begins his reign of terror.

Chaos (2005) Review

Weak
Though it ended up going straight to DVD in the U.S. (after earning a total of about $1 million in France), Chaos surprises by opening with a real bang. Might something good actually come of this? The film opens with a big bank heist -- always a reliable crowd-pleaser -- in which Wesley Snipes' Lorenz holes up and makes a bunch of demands, including that suspended cop Quentin Conners (Jason Statham) be brought in to negotiate. But just when things look like they're going to get interesting, Lorenz blows up the bank, the hostages all run out, and Lorenz vanishes... along with the movie's engagement.

Chaos immediately descends into doldrums, with Conners and extremely strange partner Shane (Ryan Phillippe) trying to figure out who Lorenz is and why he robbed a bank but didn't steal anything. Cat and mouse ensues, Seven style, until we figure out the truth that's been telegraphed since the very beginning. (And trust me, everything you need to fill in the pieces can be found in the last two paragraphs.)

Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic Review

Good
Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic is like sweet, feature-length revenge for the relatively small,l but almost assuredly scarred, minority of comics and actors who didn't quite make it on Saturday Night Live. Indeed, my first exposure to Silverman was as a teenage fan of SNL, weathering a mid-nineties bad patch; she was funny, with her gee-whiz energy and off-kilter delivery, but the show didn't know what to do with her, and she was off within a year.

She then opted to write her own ticket, returning to stand-up, making occasional film appearances, and honing Jesus is Magic, the one-woman mostly-stand-up show, now available as a feature film. The film version combines her standup act with a handful of cutaways to songs and skits. A few of her comic buddies make appearances, but as Silverman informs us during the opening number, the film is really about her, and only her.
