21 Years: Richard Linklater - Clips

Indie filmmaking is one of the best niches to find super-talented directors and writers; and none more so than Richard Linklater. Having recently received a flood of praise for the extraordinary and innovative 'Boyhood' - a movie filmed over thirteen years with the same actors - actors and movie makers everywhere join this appraising documentary marking 21 years of amazing cinema from this artist. With works including the decade spanning romance trilogy 'Before Sunrise', musical comedy 'School of Rock', animated thriller 'A Scanner Darkly', crime drama 'Bernie' and underdog flicks 'Slacker' and 'Bad News Bears', the Texan cine-hero continues to produce imaginative and totally unique, genre-crossing stories with comedy 'That's What I'm Talking About' and a 'School of Rock' TV series marking his upcoming projects.

Dazed And Confused Review

Extraordinary
This film started a number of careers, and it's definitely a classic and a high moment in the career of director Richard Linklater (also known for Slacker, the disappointing Before Sunrise, and the new Waking Life).

It is an entertaining fictionalization of high school graduation weekend of the senior class of 1976 in Linklater's former home city of Austin, Texas. Jocks, rednecks, cheerleaders, stoners, frosh, and the other high school demographic groups are all lovingly and respectfully rendered on Linklater's canvas. Though I didn't graduate until the mid-'80s, I'm pretty sure that the amount of pot smoking is this film is not exaggerated. And as evidence of the director's commitment to brutal realism, Foghat's "Slow Ride" is heard not once, not twice, but three times before the end of the movie. Rock on.

100 Girls Review

Good
One hell of an oddity, 100 Girls is the bizarre tale of a lovestruck young geek (Jonathan Tucker) who, after a mysterious one-night stand in a darkened elevator, finds himself pining for the girl he connected with on that night. The only problem -- he never saw her face or got her name, but of course she's The One.

Tucker's Matthew embarks on a quest to scour the college dorm in which they met in order to track the mystery woman down. His M.O.: Posing as a maintenance man so he can sneak into the girls' rooms and try to match up a pair of panties she left behind in the elevator. And somehow this is meant to be charming.

Reform School Girl Review

Terrible
Rarely have I longed for the hours lost watching a terrible movie than after (and during) a screening of the atrocious Reform School Girl, a picture released 11 years after its making on DVD (and a remake of an oldie), thanks to a shortish appearance in it by Joey star Matt LeBlanc -- who, no, does not play one of the girls.

B-lister Aimee Graham gets a rare starring role here as a good girl who gets caught up in a random and dumbass crime (with LeBlanc), then gets sent to reform school where she spends her time swabbing floors, inciting food fights, exploring lesbian love (natch!), and throwing the big race at the "school" track meet.

Some Girls Review

Weak
Some Girls takes the tired old movie about an ensemble of jaded, twentysomething youths in New York City, all looking for meaning and finding nothing but bitter heartbreak, and dramatically updates it, transforming this film into an ensemble of jaded, twentysomething youths in Los Angeles, all looking for meaning and finding nothing but bitter heartbreak.

While there's not much to recommend in this indie study of pretentiousness, it's curious for the Ribisi siblings -- Marissa, the stunning redhead best known from her cameo in The Brady Bunch Movie, and her brother Giovanni, who strikes a much different character here than he's usually typecast in.

The Brady Bunch Movie Review

Excellent
Did I grow up Brady? Did I! One of the first of the 1970s TV series to get the big-screen treatment, The Brady Bunch Movie remains virtually the only successful film from that genre -- one that studios continue to experiment in with disastrous results. (Full disclosure: We here at filmcritic.com are rabidly fanatical for Josie and the Pussycats.)

But Brady -- the movie -- does everything right, balancing faithfulness with the original film with rib-jabbing at its family-friendly kitsch. The catch: The Bradys are updated to the 1990s, but they haven't changed a bit. The plot itself -- about a plan to put a mini-mall in place of the Brady block -- is a throwaway. It's just an excuse to set us up with endless Brady antics, from Cindy's tattling to Peter's voice changing, to Johnny Bravo. If all this means something to you, the film will be nothing short of hilarious. If it's meaningless to you, just look at what you missed!

Dinner And Driving Review

Good
Perennial supporting man Joey Slotnick gets the lead in a romantic comedy -- and not only that, he's got two hot women after him! Too bad this 1997 indie never saw the light of day, only now finding a home on DVD. And that's a shame, because Slotnick has a natural charm that earns him a spot as Woody Allen's neurotic, younger doppelganger.

Director Lawrence Trilling (who would go on to direct for tons of TV shows -- this is his only real film) has a good handle on what's funny and what keeps a movie going on. His plot revolves around an exotic beauty who comes into Slotnick's life on the eve of his engagement to pretty-but-safe Paula Devicq, but a parade of well formed supporting characters in various stages of commitment keep things hopping.
