Independence Day: Resurgence Review

Good

Two decades is a long time to wait for a sequel, especially one starring much of the original cast. (The record may go to the 32 years between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.) But clearly filmmakers Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin have long wanted to follow up their 1996 blockbuster hit Independence Day. The result is a big, fast sci-fi action thriller that lacks both the original movie's enjoyably raucous tone and its break-out star Will Smith.

After the events of 20 years ago, America has taken alien technology to heart, improving transportation and military defence, including creating a base on the moon to keep an eye out for returning tentacled baddies. Then an orb-shape ship appears, followed by a new mothership so large that it spans the entire Atlantic Ocean. President Lanford (Sela Ward) turns to the surviving heroes of the previous invasion for help: scientific expert David (Jeff Goldblum), former president Whitmore (Bill Pullman) and mad genius Brakish (Brent Spiner). Meanwhile, a young team of next-generation pilots dives into the fray, including Dylan (Jesse T. Usher playing Will Smith's now-grown son), Jake (Liam Hemsworth), Patricia (Maika Monroe as Whitmore's daughter and Jake's fiancee) and Charlie (Travis Tope).

The film is assembled in standard disaster movie style, quickly introducing characters and their personal little melodramas before throwing them into the mad chaos of this new invasion. Emmerich is an expert at this structure, using it to hugely entertaining effect from Independence Day to Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, 2014 and White House Down. So it's odd that this film feels so lifeless by comparison. The story rushes past at a breathless pace that never allows the characters or events to gain any real traction with the audience. The only sharp wit on hand this time comes from throwaway one-liners apparently improvised by Goldblum. And the action feels eerily derivative, rehashed from Emmerich's filmography with added elements from Star Wars and Apocalypse Now.

Independence Day: Resurgence - Teaser Trailer

Everyone knows the tale of David Levinson and Captain Steven Hiller, the two men at the forefront of the last Alien invasion. Since that last fateful day, Levinson has worked tirelessly to protect the world and strengthen it from alien attacks, even using the technology they discovered on board the alien spaceship to counter their possible attack methods.

When the people of Earth learn that Aliens are on their way back to our planet, there's automatic hysteria and a hope that the newly installed space defences will help counter the attack. Whatever stringent plans David develops he, more than anyone, realises that it will probably not be enough to protect us.

Independence Day: Resurgence takes place twenty years after the original movie and sees many of the cast taking up the same role again. The film is directed by Roland Emmerich (known for The Day After Tomorrow, Godzilla and the first Independence Day movie.)

The 5th Wave Review

Very Good

Also based on the first in a trilogy of post-apocalyptic teen novels, this thriller feels like it could be a worthy successor to The Hunger Games saga, with its smart story and strong characters. The premise feels remarkably grounded, as it follows a feisty teen while her world is turned upside down by an alien invasion. And Chloe Grace Moretz gives one of her most complex performances to date as a quick, flawed heroine.

The title refers to the stages of invasion, as unseen aliens quietly take over the planet. And then not so quietly. Most of humanity has been killed by disasters or disease, with the survivors waiting for whatever the next wave of attack might be. Before this, Cassie (Moretz) was a normal 16-year-old with a crush on the cute Ben (Nick Robinson). Now she's running for her life, trying to rescue her little brother Sam (Zackary Arthur), who has been whisked to safety by the gung-ho Colonel Vosch (Liev Schreiber) and his military resistance. Along the way, she meets farm boy Evan (Alex Roe), whom she reluctantly trusts mainly because he's such a hunk. Meanwhile, Ben finds himself in Sam's unit in the newly formed child's army Vosch is training to hunt down aliens who have taken human form.

Director Blakeson keeps the pace brisk without rushing past important details. This makes what happens feel unusually believable, and it also allows the actors to add personal touches to their performances. Moretz finds Cassie's innate courage and quick physicality, but nicely balances it with her impulsive decisions and adolescent self-doubt. As in most of these movies, she has to be in a love triangle, but her scenes with both Robinson and Roe offer something a bit more intriguing, mainly because both actors have surprises up their sleeves. There's also a fourth person in this relationship in the form of Maika Monroe's tough-girl fighter Ringer, perhaps the most intriguing character on-screen.

The 5th Wave Trailer

Cassie Sullivan is only 16-years-old but her fighting spirit and courage has left her as one of the only survivors on a demolished Earth. The world has been taken over by alien forces known only as The Others, and they have launched a strategic attack on the planet in order to gain ownership. First came the darkness as the mothership wiped all power from the globe; the second wave brought total devastation in the cities, flooding everything in sight; and with the third wave came an airborne infection so deadly it took out whole nations in months. It wasn't long before they launched their invasion, killing any survivors and possessing human beings as hosts to walk among people in secret. Now what's left of the world is preparing for what may be the most apocalyptic wave of all, but the strongest people have survived and they're not ready to give up their home just yet. Cassie knows to trust no-one, but when she meets another apparent survivor, she knows she has to put her faith in him if she wants to find her missing brother.

It Follows Review

Very Good

With an inventive retro style, writer-director David Robert Mitchell offers an enjoyable riff on the teen horror movie. The film is shot with a fierce sense of perspective that draws the audience into a series of situations that are so unnerving that we're looking over our own shoulders as we leave the cinema. So even though some of the set-pieces feel under-cooked, the film is unsettling and involving.

The story takes place in a Detroit suburb, where Jay (Maika Monroe) is told by her boyfriend Hugh (Jake Weary) that he's passed something on to her when they slept together. And it's far worse than an STD. Now Jay can see random people following her everywhere. If one of them catches up with her she dies, and they'll go back to following Hugh. In a panic, Jay turns to her lovelorn childhood pal Paul (Keir Gilchrist) and her little sister Kelly (Lili Sepe), as well as her friend Yara (Olivia Luccardi) and groovy neighbour Greg (Daniel Zovatto). Together they run away to take stock of the situation, and all become convinced that the threat is real. The question is what to do next.

Although set in the present day, the film has a vivid 1970s feel, as these teens drive around in vintage cars, use landlines and think hiding out at a cabin in the woods is a good idea. And there are thematic echoes as well, with absent parents and the dark approach to youthful sex. Yes, this sexually transmitted stalker makes all of the film's intimate encounters feel eerily joyless, as if sex is something to reluctantly get out of the way. So over the course of the film, we watch these happy, carefree teens turn hollow and paranoid, which is surprisingly moving. And more than a little creepy. The fresh cast makes all of this remarkably realistic, especially since the plot's supernatural craziness is clearly a metaphor for the "Just say no" generation.
