Madonna's latest album Mdna has become the fastest selling debut of 2012, according to CNN. Nielsen SoundScan figures show that the album sold 359,000 units in its first week and became the fifth consecutive album from the 53 year-old pop star to top the charts. The album was released on March 26, 2012 and despite receiving mixed reviews, Madonna's extensive fan-base was enough to ensure that the album became a chart-topping success.
The success came, somewhat surprisingly, despite an incredibly low-key promotional schedule which only saw Madonna give a Facebook interview to Jimmy Fallon. Somehow, the 'Give Me All Your Luvin' singer has found that she can scale the heights of the US and UK album charts without the aid of extensive TV and radio appearances, magazine interviews and glossy ad campaigns. Mdna is Madonna's eighth number one album, according to Billboard and the only female with more number one albums under her belt is Barbra Streisand, with nine. She may have kept pre-release promotion to a minimum, but Madonna will be embarking on a world tour shortly, to support the album. The tour kicks off in Tel Aviv on May 29, 2012.
