Madonna's bid to join fundraising all-star group BAND AID III has reportedly been rejected by SIR BOB GELDOF - because she is American-born.

The VOGUE singer, 46, hoped to join Robbie Williams and Coldplay in the studio to re-record DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS? in a drive to raise $28.8 million (GBP16 million) for African famine casualties.

But her efforts have been snubbed by Geldof and his co-organiser MIDGE URE, even though the superstar is married to British film-maker Guy Ritchie and has adopted England as her second home.

Ure, who co-wrote the 1984 hit single with Geldof, says, "As Bob says, at the end of the day she's a Yank. We don't need that."
