Madonna says more people should adopt babies from Africa.
Appearing on American TV programme Late Show with David Letterman she spoke about her recent adoption of a one-year-old David Banda from Malawi and the controversy that the process caused.
She told the host that the adoption laws were not clearly defined in Malawi and like many African countries, they were not used to dealing with the adoption process.
"We were basically creating the laws as we went," she said.
However, she told the audience that she viewed the adoption as "saving a life" and encouraged more adoptions from the country.
"There's over a million orphans in Malawi, and in my opinion the laws need to change because these children need to be rescued," said Madonna.
The singer did not answer questions about Angelina Jolie's recent criticism of the adoption. In a magazine interview Jolie said that she would never take a child away from a country where adoption is illegal.
