Madonna thrilled fans at France's annual NRJ Music Awards by declaring her "heart belongs" to the gallic country.

The MATERIAL GIRL's pal Britney Spears presented the singer with a Special Award at the Cannes show on Saturday night (24JAN04), and Madonna wowed the crowd by praising the support they've given her over the past two decades.

She told the audience, "My ambition may be American, and I may have married a Brit, but my heart belongs to France.''

British star Dido and French group KYO were the big winner's at the fifth ceremony - the sexy singer picked up prizes for Best Single (Life For Rent) and Best International Female Artist.

Other big winners included Justin Timberlake, who took the Best International Male Artist honour; Linkin Park, who won the Best International Group prize; and Blue, who scooped the Best International Song award for their SIR Elton John duet, SORRY SEEMS TO BE THE HARDEST WORD.
