Pop queen Madonna is refusing to cut a provocative scene in her new video, in which she throws a grenade into a PRESIDENT George W Bush look-a-like's lap.

The pop superstar has chosen to re-edit the promo for American Life in a bid to make sure that the video isn't perceived as being anti-American or anti-Bush.

But she knows her climactic scenes, in which a pinless grenade, tossed into a Bush doppelganger's lap turns into a harmless cigar lighter, will raise eyebrows.

She says, "I am not being anti-Bush in the scene.

"I am being ironic and tongue-in-cheek with the grenade. I wanted to turn a weapon of destruction, like a grenade, into something innocuous. My wish is to finding an alternative to war. I hope that's clear.

"Is it my dream to go to war and bomb a country? No. But my point of view now is that we're there and we have to support our troops and all I want is for those that are still alive to get out quickly and make it home in one piece."
