Madonna feared her performing days were numbered in 1984 after rolling around onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards and accidentally flashing her underwear to the audience.
The Material Girl, who made her television debut at the ceremony, took to the stage in a white cropped wedding dress to sing Like A Virgin and she admits the big gig didn't go as planned.
During an appearance on U.S. programme The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on Monday (30Jan12) she explained, "Here's what happened. I was standing at the top of a wedding cake, as one does, and I walked down these steps, which were the tiers of a wedding cake, and I lost my shoe. I lost my white stiletto and I thought, 'Oh god, how am I going to get that? It's over there and I'm on TV!'
"So I thought, 'Well, I'll pretend I meant to do this,' and I dove onto the floor and I rolled around and I reached for the shoe and as I reached for the shoe the dress went up and the underpants were shown. I didn't mean to (do it)!
"(My manager) Freddy (DeMann) did say to me afterwards in the dressing room - he was white and he was so upset - and he said, 'That's it, you've ruined your career.' I didn't even know that was my butt showing! I couldn't compute everything that had happened. And since I didn't really have a career yet, I didn't feel like I had lost anything."
The major wardrobe malfunction actually skyrocketed her career.
