Director M Night Shyamalan has scored success with his latest movie THE VILLAGE, after it topped America's box office with a $50.8 million (GBP28.2 million) opening weekend.

The Village, starring Sigourney Weaver, Adrien Brody, William Hurt and RON HOWARD's daughter Bryce Dallas Howard, bumped off the previous weekend's top movie, THE Bourne Supremacy, which slipped to number with $23.4 million (GBP13 million).

Denzel Washington's remake of The Manchurian Candidate opened at number with $20.2 million (GBP11.2 million).

The weekend's other wide releases flopped. HAROLD AND KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE premiered at number seven with $5.15 million (GBP2.8 million), while family sci-fi saga Thunderbirds, featuring SIR Ben Kingsley and Bill Paxton in an update of the cult TV series, debuted in 11th place with $2.7 million (GBP1.5 million).
