Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer

After the release of The Force Awakens at the end of 2015, Disney and Lucas films didn't mess around delivering the general public its first announcement/teaser for The Last Jedi back at the start of 2016. Now, well over a year later, we finally get to see some proper footage from the upcoming movie.

Many of the key cast from Star Wars: The Force Awakens will feature in The Last Jedi including Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron and Adam Driver as Kylo Ren who famously slaughtered his much-loved father in a face to face battle that made for one of the most pivotal scenes in the history of Star Wars.

As ever with new Star Wars releases, the scrip and the story outline is one of Hollywood's most closely guarded secrets and few official details have been released to the public. We do know that the story will pick up where The Force Awakens ended with Rey going off into a mountainous setting to hunt down Luke Skywalker in a bid to train with him and learn his knowledge.

Lupita Nyong'o Is The Star Of The Show In 'Queen Of Katwe'

Lupita Nyong'o

It feels cruel that we haven't seen much of Lupita Nyong'o on the big screen since she won an Academy Award for her first film role in '12 Years A Slave', but it's worth the long wait to see her in her latest venture, Disney's 'Queen Of Katwe'.

Madina Nalwanga and Lupita Nyong'oMadina Nalwanga and Lupita Nyong'o star in 'Queen Of Katwe'

She's yet to grace the screen with a leading part, but her supporting role in this film about Ugandan chess champion Phiona Mutesi is star quality. She plays Phiona's firm but affectionate mother Nakku Harriet, while Phiona is played by newcomer Madina Nalwanga.

Lupita Nyong'o Thinks Queen Of Katwe Is A Normal Story

Lupita Nyong'o Mira Nair

Lupita jumped at a chance to work with her longtime friend, filmmaker Mira Nair, shooting Queen of Katwe in Uganda, next door to Kenya, where she grew up. Most films set in Africa, she says, are about "wars or political dictators or what-have-you. But this is a view of Africa told with Africans front and centre. It's their narrative, and that means that you have layered characters. Yes, you have struggle, but it is also a story about perseverance, vision and the magic of realising your dream."

Lupita Nyong'o and Madina Nalwanga in Queen Of Katwe

In the film, Nyong'o is Harriet, the mother of child chess prodigy Phiona, played by newcomer Madina Nalwanga. Nyong'o loved working with the young actors. "Children remind you what the heart of the matter is," she says. "They work from a truthfulness. I mean, I watched Madina develop her craft as we went along. She was always so curious about what we were doing and why we were doing it. I would be warming up and she would ask me what I was doing, and the next thing I knew she was doing it. With every take, I'd see she would have a deeper understanding of what the dynamics were, what was at stake, what the subtext was. And she may not even be able to articulate that. But I could see her growing as an actor."

The Jungle Book Review

Good

Using remarkably photorealistic animation, this remake of the 1967 Disney classic is warm and enjoyable, with a few moments of suspense for the kids in the audience. Loosely based on Rudyard Kipling's stories, it's a lively tale packed with memorable characters. But it feels relentlessly tamed for a family audience.

Stranded in the jungle as a baby, Mowgli (Neel Sethi) was rescued by the panther Bagheera (voiced by Ben Kingsley) and raised by a pair of wolves (Lupita Nyong'o and Giancarlo Esposito). But the presence of a human in the jungle is unacceptable to tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba), who was injured by a man and now wants Mowgli's blood. While fleeing to the human world, Mowgli has a fateful encounter with the seductive python Kaa (Scarlett Johansson). He's rescued by the bear Baloo (Bill Murray), with whom he has a series of adventures, including being kidnapped by a gang of monkeys led by King Louie (Christopher Walken). But Shere Khan is still searching for him, and Mowgli can't hide forever.

Filmmaker Jon Favreau (Iron Man) keeps the story skimming along the surface, avoiding the darker themes woven into the premise. So instead of exploring the meaning of humanity or mankind's relationship with nature, the film is a breezy adventure romp with the usual action movie beats and some surprisingly nasty violence. And it looks utterly amazing, especially since the credits note that it was filmed completely in downtown Los Angeles.

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens Review

Essential

Appealing both to a new generation of viewers and fans of the series since the beginning, this 30-years-later sequel to 1983's Return of the Jedi is a thrilling adventure. Filmmaker J.J. Abrams has managed to capture the tone of the original trilogy while telling a story about young, vibrant new characters whose connection to the overall saga deepens intriguingly as events unfurl.

Over the past three decades, the Empire has regrouped, forming the First Order to crush the Old Republic for good. And the plucky Rebellion hasn't offered much resistance since leader Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) disappeared. The Empire's top henchman Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) is searching for him just as diligently as the rebel leader General Leia (Carrie Fisher). But the real action is happening out of their grasp, as disaffected storm trooper Finn (John Boyega) teams up with rebel pilot Poe (Oscar Isaac) and then feisty scavenger Rey (Daisy Ridley) and expressive droid BB-8. Along the way, Han Solo and Chewbacca (Harrison Ford and Peter Mayhew) find themselves back in the fray. And everyone is startled when there's a strong stirring in the force.

Abrams beautifully recreates the scruffy, clanky mechanical atmosphere of the original trilogy, infusing scenes with witty banter and John William's soaring score to throw us right back into that familiar galaxy. This includes the saga's main themes: the temptation of power, how true heroism is often accidental, and the tension between parents and children. Combine this with a plot that propels itself with a series of unexpected adventures and battles, all centred on the characters, and the film taps strongly into the teen in all of us.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens TV Spot Trailer

After the victory of the Rebel Alliance over the Galactic Empire and subsequent demolition of The Death Star, you'd imaging life in a certain galaxy would be a little more subdued, but as we soon learn, life for Princess Leia, Luke and Hans wasn't exactly easy following their small yet essential victory.

30 years on and to most citizens - humanoid and alien - the stories of evil Lord Darth Vader and the Jedi Masters are just a legend, a story they tell their children that starts with the well-known overture: 'A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away'. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the seventh film in the Star Wars series and is an additional story to the original Star Wars outline.

The film follows a set of new characters as they join the battle and fight the evil forces once again threatening to destroy their galaxy. The Force Awakens was directed by Jj Abrams and sees a number of cast favourites return to the story including Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher.

It's finally here! The teaser trailer you've all been waiting for: 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens', and while it's not really giving anything away, it looks pretty intense. Vehicles have updated, the stormtroopers are looking shinier and R2D2 appears to have evolved.

Since George Lucas announced his retirement from the franchise, there's been all sorts of speculation about what differences could be expected from an updated sequel: though it's difficult to tell from the less than one and a half minute trailer. Everyone seems to be in a rush (especially, in a comical fashion, R2D2) and there's some brand new faces, who all look a little nervous as a voiceover booms out: 'There has been an awakening. Have you felt it? The dark side and the light.'

The American Music Awards Are Happening RIGHT NOW And The Fashion Is Outrageous

One Direction Lupita Nyong'o Diana Ross American Music Awards

We have to talk about something. Specifically, about the American Music Awards. More specifically, about One Direction at the American Music Awards. Now, I don’t want to alarm anyone, but have you seen those young British gentlemen and their outfits? The boyband is definitely turning into a manband these days and their black-on-black ensembles were strategically chosen to reflect the change.

One Direction
Gone are the wind-swept, vaguely hippie-ish days.

They went for a hipster-meets-business-chic kind of look (see the pictures over on CNN) and we love it – even if it has the potential to this decade’s sagging white pants. Harry’s hat and Liam’s l cheetah print shirt were particularly nice touches.

Lupita Nyong'o may have been victorious at this year's Academy-Awards, but it sounds the process isn't particularly pleasant.

Highlights From The 2014 Costume Institute Gala - Stars In Their Monday Best

Kim Kardashian Kanye West Taylor Swift Beyonce Knowles Jay Z Lupita Nyong'o

Last year at the Met Gala, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West made news for all the wrong reasons. While the then-heavily pregnant Kardashian should have been able to wear whatever she wanted, news outlets jumped on her choice of a floral printed bodycon dress like there was no tomorrow. So this year, with the theme of the Gala being “Charles James: Beyond Fashion”, the pressure was on for this couple in particular – Kanye is a designer after all. Fortunately, K&K did not disappoint and walked the red carpet in a pair of stunning ensembles. While West opted for a classic black tux, accessorizing it with a white tie and vest, his fiancée showed off her enviable post-pregnancy figure in a structured, futuristic blue satin dress. The cinched at the waist look worked really well with her hourglass shape and the pair were just a sight to behold. Oh, and in case it's still a question - there were no rings on either of their fingers.

Kate Upton
Kate Upton went for an extravagant Dolce & Gabbanna ensemble.

Some other highlights from the night included Beyonce and Jay-Z, him in a classic black and white suit and her in a luxurious (if slightly see-through Givenchi dress). Taylor Swift came in with a more innocent look than we’re used to seeing her in lately. The Red singer wore a pink , form-fitting Oscar de la Renta gown with a long train and looked as statuesque as ever in it.

Lupita Nyong'o In Talks With Star Wars: Episode VII Director, J.J Abrams?

Lupita Nyong'o Star Wars

12 Years a Slave star Lupita Nyong'o is rumoured to be in talks with J.J. Abrams about the possibility of appearing in Star Wars: Episode VII.

Secrecy generally surrounds the plot and casting decisions of Star Wars owing to its high profile status and constant media coverage. As such it is difficult to speculate who Nyong'o, should she be cast in the sci-fi film, would play. The role she could be considered for, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is that of Obi-Wan Kenobi's descendent. This character may be one of the lead female roles but there is a separate ongoing search for two actors - a male and female - in their twenties who will, most likely, have some form of romantic relationship. However, Nyong'o may be being considered in this search as opposed to that of Obi-Wan Kenobi's descendant.

A relative newcomer to mainstream Hollywood, the 31-year-old attracted attention and widespread admiration for her role in 12 Years a Slave in which she played Patsey. The actress took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in movie last week and it was around this time that she met with Abrams.

New Liam Neeson thriller Non-Stop landed in cinemas last Friday and took its first weekend box office by storm, soaring to number one. The movie had the tricky task of taking on all the Oscar-nominated movies that are still out in theatres but rose to the challenge masterfully, earning $30 million ahead of Son of God's $26.5 million. The tense who-dunnit also managed the impressive task of taking out the previous number one film, The Lego Movie, which was forced to settle for third this week.

Liam Neeson Races Against Time To Save Passengers & Himself In 'Non-Stop.'

Neeson's lead role is the movie's main draw, and fans of the Taken actor have a seemingly insatiable thirst for the Irish star's serious, determined and urgent acting style. However, if Neeson's star power was all that was drawing moviegoers in Non-Stop's first weekend, what is it that could see the movie retain its coveted ranking?

Lupita Nyong'o: Where Is Hollywood's Brightest New Star Headed?

Lupita Nyong'o Steve McQueen

Lupita Nyong'o must be feeling on top of the world right now: she has become the talk of the town all awards season with a conveyor belt of supporting actress trophies headed for her shelf, topped off with Sunday's crowning glory, an Oscar. Despite few at the Academy Awards being able to pronounce the Mexican-Kenyan actress' name*, Lupita has been praised for her surefooted sense of red carpet style, her permanently dazzling smile and that Hollywood gold dust trait, genuine niceness.

Lupita Nyong'o
Lupita Nyong'o Has Emerged As One Of The Most Exciting New Talents Of The Year.

Unlike many actors who triumph at the Oscars, Lupita hasn't been building to this moment of glory throughout a long career. In fact, she was cast as Patsey in 12 Years a Slave before she'd even graduated from Yale after she was selected as one of the School of Drama's outstanding students. She had a solid base of theatre training from her university and a Kenyan AIDS prevention television series under her belt but that was about it; she was about to get thrown headfirst into Hollywood.

"12 Years A Slave" To Hit 1,000 More Theaters Thanks To Oscar Buzz

Steve McQueen Chiwetel Ejiofor Lupita Nyong'o

A Best Picture Oscar definitely brings a lot of cache to a film. Now that 12 Years a Slave has won the big one, Fox Searchlight is planning a major expansion in US theaters. The unexpected move comes after the film saw an unexpected spike in profits over Oscar weekend. On its 20th weekend, the film grossed $975,931 from 411 theaters - up 86 percent from the previous weekend and pushing its domestic total to a strong $50.3 million, THR reports.

Steve McQueen, Oscars Ceremony
McQueen's film is seeing additional commercial success after its awards season run.

The new expansion will include more than 1,000 theaters across the US. Typically, a movie would not see an expansion once its out on DVD, since theater owners don’t make significant profits of them. However, in the case of 12 Years a Slave, all concerned parties are willing to make an exception. The expansion is expected to contribute to a sizeable profit for both Fox and the additional 1,000 theaters.

Hollywood was out in full force for one of last night's biggest and most glamorous Oscars after-parties, hosted by Vanity Fair. After the star-studded ceremony had taken place, guests flocked to the annual party and its new specially designed setting at 8680 Sunset Boulevard, built under the direction of architect Basil Walter, according to the magazine.

Ellen Degeneres Hosts One Massive Pizza Party At The Oscars

Ellen Degeneres Bradley Cooper Jared Leto Lupita Nyong'o Kevin Spacey Brad Pitt Angelina Jolie

When Ellen Degeneres took the Academy Awards gig this year, she had some huge expectations to live up to. Mostly expectations that she wouldn’t alienate half the audience thanks to a certain performance by Seth Macfarlane the previous year. So Ellen found an easy solution and bribed all the attendees with pizza. Presumably, it was the ever hungry Jennifer Lawrence who had the best time as the delivery guy (still unclear whether he was an actor or not) walked into the Dolby Theater and started handing out slices to the A-listers. Leonardo DiCaprio, Jared Leto and Harison Ford each got a slice, before Ellen left it to producer Harvey Winestein to foot the bill. He must have been a good tipper, though.

"No pressure, only a billion people are watching, whatever you feel is right," she shouted.

Ellen Degeneres
Ellen's casual hosting style was a nice change of pace for the stuffy award show.

Jennifer Lawrence Turns Oscars Tumble Into Yearly Tradition

Jennifer Lawrence Lupita Nyong'o

Since she didn’t win Best Actress at last night’s Oscars, Jennifer Lawrence didn’t get the chance to commit one of her trademark gaffes onstage. So she did the next best thing – a red carpet gaffe – instead. Well, gaffe might not be the right word. Given that Lawrence finally got her pizza and photos of that little pizza party in the audience are spreading like wildfire online, it seems like Lawrence really can do no wrong in the eyes of her audience.

Jennifer Lawrence, Academy Awards
Lawrence did look pretty fabulous, once she made it to the red carpet.

When Lawrence exited her limo at the Award Show, two things were immediately obvious. One, her Dior dress was very red and very stunning. We’ve known Lawrence to rock red in the past, but her strapless peplum gown this year was more mature, more form fitting and a lot, and we mean a lot tighter. Which is fine, since she looked fabulous as ever in it. Only problem - no space to move.

Lupita Nyong'o Caps Off Shining Awards Season With First Oscar Win

Lupita Nyong'o

Happy Monday everyone! While the media is still buzzing from the Oscars, most people have to get back to the real world right about now. Still, that doesn’t mean that we can’t have a little more fun rehashing the better moments from the night. Case in point: Lupita Nyong’o winning. The Supporting Actress category rarely gets as much attention as it did this year, but it isn’t hard to see what got everyone to pay attention this year. 12 Years a Slave, while shining a light on an ugly part of American history and making many squirm in their seats, is undeniably a great and necessary.

Lupita Nyong'o, Oscars Red Carpet
Also, let's just marvel at that dress for a few more seconds.

In Fashion Terms, The Independent Spirit Awards Have The Oscars Beat

Lupita Nyong'o Angela Bassett Anna Kendrick Ming-Na Wen Jared Leto

Tonight is Oscar night, which means celebrities are expected to amp up the glamour and sport the latest in couture for their trips down the red carpet. But at last night’s Independent Spirit awards, they were free to let down their hair (or sport the messiest of pixie cuts as the trend seems to be) and spread their quirky fashion wings. If you’re into it (who isn’t?) read on for a rundown of the best looks.

Lupita Nyong'o, Independent Spirit Awards
Incidentally, Nyong'o's outfit matched her shiny new Supporting actress award.

We can’t start a fashion rundown this season without talking about Lupita Nyong’o. Look, the woman just knows how to rock an outfit – she’s worn bright colors and neutrals, gowns and short numbers, patterns, prints and solid colors and she looks flawless (resisting the temptation to hashtag it). This time it was a silk crocodile-printed Stella McCartney romper which she paired with grey suede Casadei heels, a Devi Kroell clutch, and Neil Lane jewels. We’ll stop listing designer names now, but just look at the outfit.

The Oscars 2014

All eyes are on Hollywood this weekend as the Academy Awards take place this Sunday night. Other too-close races include actor (Matthew Mcconaughey vs Chiwetel Ejiofor), supporting actor (Jared Leto vs Barkhad Abdi) and supporting actress (Lupita Nyong'o vs Jennifer Lawrence). The only sure thing is Cate Blanchett for Best Actress. And that Gravity will mop up all the technical awards. Miley Cyrus Bangerz Tour 2014

Miley Cyrus Bangerz Tour Controversy: Miley Cyrus has predictably upped the ante on her controversial media storm by making sure all eyes are on her during her currently touring Bangerz show. The concerts have been packed with the usual raunchy and cringe-worthy stunts, including faking a "Monica Lewinski," getting freaky on the bonnet of a car, snogging Katy Perry and doing some pretty unsightly things to a hot dog. Her pre-teen fans are obviously revelling in it but their outraged accompanying parents have called for the tour to be axed. Check out the whole debate.

Baftas 2014: Is Jennifer Lawrence Just Going To Win Everything, All The Time?

Jennifer Lawrence BAFTA Lupita Nyong'o

This is getting a bit ridiculous: Jennifer Lawrence could just about win the Ballon d’Or right now. Best Supporting Actress at the BAFTAS ahead of Sally Hawking and Lupita Nyong’o? Come on, really? We get that that Laurence is adorable, both in front of and behind the camera.

American Hustle cast Jennifer LawrenceJennifer Lawrence won big for her role in American Hustle

We also get that she’s a positive role model for young women with her organic approach to media and ‘normal’ appearance (her appearance is not normal, though is it). And while we get all that, it doesn’t mean she should just get all the awards.

The 2014 BAFTAs Run Like The Oscars' Older, Funnier Sister

Stephen Fry Emma Thompson Chiwetel Ejiofor Steve McQueen Alfonso Cuaron Lupita Nyong'o Barkhad Abdi

As the British equivalent to the Oscars, last night’s BAFTAs were obviously a glamorous affair. In between bouts of Stephen Fry’s self deprecating humor (“[Oprah’s] performance in The Butler was so moving, I almost gave mine the afternoon off.”) and jabs at all of his colleagues (Fry introduced the flawless Emma Thompson as “In the film world, a goddess. In real life, a ghastly piece of sickly shrieking awful.”) there were also some awards given out.

Stephen Fry, The Hobbit Premiere
Stephen Fry always makes for an entertaining awards show.

The big winners of the night were somewhat surprising. Predictions pegged Gravity and 12 Years A Slave – the two award show favorites so far – for the majority of BAFTAs as well. Instead, the Steve McQueen directed 12 Years only took two awards out of 8 nods total. Granted, they were the big ones - best film and leading actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor) – but that was it.

Bieber Banged Up For Druggy Drag Racing: Justin Bieber has just had the mother of all terrible fortnights. The recalcitrant popstar was under investigation for a vicious egg attack on his neighbor's home by police who discovered drugs upon raiding Bieber's abode. The 'Baby' singer headed snowboarding with his equally rebellious chums with the threat of deportment looming. The singer was then arrested yesterday for DUI and drag racing in Miami.

Bieber showed what a true hard-ass he really was when police stopped him and he immediately snitched on himself, saying he was drunk and high on weed and prescription medication. The 19 year-old was released from a Miami jail an hour after a Miami judge, set a "standard" $2,500 bond Thursday afternoon. The widely-circulated mugshot shows the fallen star grinning ear-to-ear in his orange prison v-neck, prompting Seth Rogen to brand him "a piece of s**t."

Lupita Nyong'o, "American Hustle" Dominate SAG Awards 2014

The Screen Actor Guild Awards are one of the biggest industry events during awards season and the one of the early indicators for Oscar trends. So, when Lupita Nyong’o won the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting role (aka Supporting Actress) over Jennifer Lawrence, the world of film took note. Earlier this month, Lawrence beat Nyong’o in the corresponding category at the Golden Globes, but this sets their chances pretty much on par.

The tables turned as Nyong'o beat Lawrence in the Supporting Actress category.

Something else was made clear last night: the main contenders this January are David O’Russel’s American Hustle and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. Each film ended the night with one award, but Hustle received the top honor for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

With nine nominations, 12 Years A Slave is the obvious favorite at the Oscars this year. Among those nine nods are the big ones – Best Director and Best Picture. This could make McQueen the first black director to win the Best Director award, prompting the question: why did it take so long? Overdue or not, McQueen is ecstatic about the nominations and optimistic about 12 Years’ (generally great) chances.

Bill Marks is a U.S. federal air marshal who ironically can't stand plane journeys. His hatred for flying is only about to get a lot worse when an anonymous person breaks through the secure network on his phone to send him a threatening text explaining that they're going to kill a person on the plane every twenty minutes unless $150 million is transferred to an offshore account number. With the crew sceptical that anything's amiss and insisting that no-one could get away with murder on a 6 hour flight between the States and the UK, Bill is forced to search for the culprit alone - but time is running out as the first victim is discovered. When it is revealed that the account number is actually in his name, news spreads across the world that he has hijacked the flight and he is forced to defend himself while keeping everybody else from being harmed.

This high-action mystery thriller will have you on the edge of seat this winter with an almost impossible to believe cat and mouse chase. 'Non-Stop' has been directed by Jaume Collet-Serra ('Orphan', 'Unknown', 'House Of Wax') and written by Ryan Engle ('On a Clear Day') and John W. 12 Years A Slave Trailer

Solomon Northup was a well-educated man from a successful family living in upstate New York with his wife and three children. He was categorised as a free black man and made money through various jobs including as an entertainer playing the violin. In 1841, he was tricked into going to Washington DC with two white men for work where he was instead kidnapped and sold to slavery despite there being laws to protect free African-Americans. He spent twelve years on a plantation in Louisiana serving the brutal and abusive owner Edwin Epps. Determined to live his life again as a free man, he befriended a Canadian carpenter working for Epps by the name of Samuel Bass, whose high-morals turned Solomon's life around forever.

This poignant historical biopic is based on the 1853 autobiography 'Twelve Years a Slave' by the real Solomon Northup. It has been adapted to screen by writer John Ridley ('U Turn', 'Red Tails') and the BAFTA nominated director Steve McQueen ('Hunger', 'Shame'). With themes of freedom, racial inequality and the cruelty of mankind, '12 Years A Slave' could be one of the more heart-wrenching movies to kick of the year on its UK cinematic release on January 24th 2014.
