We were expecting some Agents of SHIELD casting news from San Diego Comic Con and Marvel didn't disappoint, announcing three new actors for season two on Saturday. Most notably, they confirmed the worst kept secret in TV - that Lucy Lawless will be joining the show.

Agents of SHIELDAgents of SHIELD was a big hit for ABC

The actress will play Isabelle Hartley, a long-time SHIELD veteran who's tough and known to brandish a knife. As Slash Film notes, Hartley doesn't appear to have previously appeared in Marvel comics and her name is not in the Marvel comics database. In other words - she's a new character.

Elsewhere, Trollied star Nick Blood will play a mercenary named Lance Hunter who helps with the SHIELD dream, which is being chased around the globe. Hunter has appeared in the Marvel comics before and was the director of S.T.R.I.K.E. He assisted SHIELD, Captain America and Captain Britain in defeating the Red Skull and later tried to recruit Captan Britain after rescuing him from the police. He's also an expert intelligence agent.

Another actor joining the Marvel universe is Reed Diamond - who you may recognise from the Brad Pitt starrer Moneyball. He'll be playing the villain Daniel Whithall, a Hydra known as Kraken in Secret Warriors. His description from the Marvel database reads:

"Daniel Whitehall, alias the Kraken is a legendary HYDRA agent, who existence had been unverifiable, until recently. Any S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that tried to find documented proof all disappeared. The Kraken preferred to work behind the scenes, seeing it as his mission to help people become what they are meant to be, usually with dangerous results. For decades he was responsible for developing HYDRA's best assets, training their best talent. This involved a lot of human trafficking, theft and murder. He was the head of the school that trained orphaned girls,, including a young Viper into human weapons. The current Kraken is actually the second Kraken, having stolen the original's identity by taking his equipment and reading his journals."

Agents of SHIELD season 2 premieres on September 23, 2014.
