Conviction Review


Good
An extremely strong true story is told with emotion and skill, but never really rises above the level of a decent TV movie. This is perhaps due to unambitious writing, which never quite gives us an engaging point of view.

After a tough childhood in rural Massachusetts, Betty Anne Waters (Swank) has always been very close to her hot-headed brother Kenny (Rockwell). So when he's arrested for a vicious murder, she refuses to believe that he's guilty. After all of the appeals fail, she enrols in law school as a mature student and, with the help of fellow lawyer Abra (Driver) and evidence expert Barry (Gallagher), seeks to challenge Kenny's conviction with new DNA evidence. But this isn't nearly as simple as it sounds.

Mumford Review


Good
Mumford reminded me how nice it is to forget yourself in the midst of a good story - Lawrence Kasdan's (The Big Chill, Grand Canyon) latest charm will keep you grinning. Speaking of smiles (and tangents), this is a great film for anyone who likes to look at mouths; I haven't seen so many close-ups of teeth and gums since the last time I went to the dentist!

Loren Dean (Enemy of the State, Apollo 13) does a decent job as Dr. Mumford, the most popular psychologist in the small town to which he just moved. Listening attentively to the tormented visitors of the treatment couch, his apparent peace of mind and even temper become infectious. Ubiquitously available and sounding less like a shrink than a wise uncle who gives just enough advice at just the right time, it's no wonder Dr. Mumford is everyone's favorite confidant. But will those he's helped to see through their own faults be just as understanding if they find out the truth of his past?

The Passion of Darkly Noon Review


Weak
Darkly Noon is Brendan Fraser, a conflicted stutterer recently escaped from a Branch Davidian-esque cult besieged by the feds. His passion is Ashley Judd (blonde, braless, sweaty, and with unshaven pits), whose home he stumbles upon in the woods. What happens when worlds collide? Think Sling Blade, but far sleepier.

Space Cowboys Review


Weak
The good news about Space Cowboys is that Clint Eastwood proves to be a skilled comedic director. The bad news is that only the first half of the movie is a comedy - the second half is a sloppy attempt at a heart-pounding, Apollo 13ish, mission-gone-haywire space drama that's vague, oversimplified and unbelievable. There's a gem of an entertaining movie somewhere in there, but it's never fully realized.

The plot is solid high concept. If you did a double-take when you first heard that John Glenn would return to space, you'll love the basic premise of Ken Kaufman's and Howard Klausner's script - four daring, old Air Force codgers weasel their way back into NASA's space shuttle program to attempt an equipment repair mission that only they know how to perform. Our movie visions of strapping, young astronauts (Dennis Quaid, Bill Paxton, Ben Affleck, to name a few) are smashed once we see an aging James Garner pull on an airtight suit.

Mumford Review


OK

"Mumford" is a weightless comedy with old-fashioned appeal, the kind of innocuous, affable picture in which happiness is just a musical montage sequence away.

Fifty years ago, it might have been a Jimmy Stewart movie, with a few subject matter alterations. Twenty-five years ago, Dustin Hoffman could have been the lead. In 1999 though, the title role goes to Loren Dean ("Gattaca"), who plays a warmhearted con man winging it as a psychologist in a small mountain town, where his unconventional therapy methods turn around the distressed lives for a smattering of eccentric residents.

Handsome, open and amiable, he's been in town only four months and already he's everyone's friend. He's just the kind of guy strangers tell their problems to, which is why he decided to give it a go in the head shrinking game.

Space Cowboys Review


OK

When septuagenarian astronaut John Glenn returned to space two years ago, phones probably started ringing all over Hollywood with pitches for the kind of high-concept audience-pleaser launched this week as "Space Cowboys."

Somebody was bound to write a connect-the-dots orbital adventure script about, say, a foursome of former test pilots who, 40 years after being passed over for the space program, are NASA's only hope to rescue the Earth from a dangerous satellite in a decaying orbit.

"Grumpy Old Men In Space" people would call it, and in the hands of 90 percent of the directors in Hollywood, that's all it might have been -- even if they got, say Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, James Garner and Donald Sutherland to play the crotchety, never-grow-up team of rocket boy retirees.
