Lionel Richie has given up trying to save the world with his music because he was pummelled for his WE ARE THE WORLD efforts. The soul man wrote the charity hit and then recruited pals like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Quincy Jones to help him record it as a star-studded effort. But even though he thought he was doing a wonderful thing by raising awareness about world poverty, Richie admits fans didn't always see it that way - some really thought Richie was making a huge political and religious statement. He explains, "There were 32 lawsuits... people disagreeing, saying, 'You, Michael, Quincy, how could you work the devil's work like this?' "It's unbelievable, the conversations you get with people and they think you're plotting on something."
