Austrian-born jazz trumpeter OSCAR KLEIN died in Germany yesterday (12DEC06). He was 76. Klein and his Jewish family fled their homeland when Nazi Germany took control in the 1930s and settled in Switzerland. Klein became a fixture on the jazz club scene in Vienna in the 1950s and went on to play and record with greats including Lionel Hampton, WILD BILL DAVISON, BILL COLEMAN and DEXTER GORDON. Late Austrian President THOMAS KLESTIL presented Klein with the nation's silver Medal of Honour, one of Austria's highest decorations, in 1996.
