Lily Allen's favourite album of 2009 was released by a little-known soul singer.

The 'Not Fair' singer - who topped the UK charts with her second LP 'It's Not Me, It's You' - admits the CD she enjoyed listening to the most over the past 12 months was a record by retro US singer-and-producer Mayer Hawthorne.

She said: "I loved Mayer Hawthorne's album 'A Strange Arrangement' - he's got a great voice and songs and it sounds so big."

Lily, 24, hadn't heard of the singer at all until she asked staff at Damon Albarn's record label Honest Jon's to recommend something new for her to try out, after she started to grow tired of mainstream releases.

She explained to The Independent newspaper: "Honest Jon's Records recommended it to me after I went in and asked them for some new stuff. That's how people used to buy their records and that's how I do it."

'A Strange Arrangement' was released in September.
